Sam’s felt lost before, but it wasn’t anything like this. She fucked up. There was no denying that. She’d set Lucifer free, and all because she felt the need to PROVE something to her brother, or whatever the fuck it was. Deep down, Sam knows that Ruby had manipulated her, had used Dean’s loss to secure a spot in Sam’s life, and even with her brother’s return from Hell... that spot hadn’t been lost. Looking back now, Sam could see how stupid she’d been. But hindsight’s twenty/twenty for a reason, and Sam knew she had no excuse.
But the Apocalypse was here, and that was all on her. And at every turn, Heaven was there, reminding her and her brother that it could only end with them... saying YES. The ultimate showdown. Lucifer VS Michael. Sam VS Dean. The mere idea of it made her feel sick. OF COURSE, neither of the siblings would ever say yes, but Heaven seemed so certain. Impossibly so, and Sam was beginning to lose hope.
They were losing everyone close to them, and Sam couldn’t shake those losses. They were supposed to SAVE people, and yeah, maybe by some unbelievable miracle they won, and saved the world. Saved billions. Did that really make up for dragging their friends into the fight? Sam didn’t think so. She missed Jo and Ellen so much.
Finding solitude whenever she could, unable to continue to keep up the whole ‘can do’ attitude for very long anymore, Sam sneaked away from the current research party at Bobby’s and found a rusty old swingset at the edge of his property. She couldn’t remember the LAST time she’d sat on a swing---she’d definitely been a child---and just sitting there, feet dragging along in the dirt, was peaceful. Sam could almost pretend the world wasn’t ending.
It wasn’t long, though, before she realized she was no longer alone. Sam knew the tread of Dean’s step well, and knew it wasn’t him. It certainly wasn’t poor Bobby. “Need something, Bill?” She called out, not looking up from the marks from her boot heels in the dirt.
