I’ve always loved the Bill & Ted movies, particularly the original Excellent Adventure, which is one of the smartest films ever made about being dumb. After 30 (!) years, the final film in the trilogy, Bill & Ted Face the Music, arrived in August, 2020, sadly relegated to an on-demand release because movie theaters were closed. While it was indeed most heinous that the two great ones were denied their opportunity to totally crush at the box office, perhaps it was just as well that they returned when they did, bringing a breath of fresh air and some much needed good-hearted amusement to a very bleak, socially distanced year. If Bill & Ted made a subdued return, this loud soundtrack was even more muted, hitting retail stores that weren’t open. By the time the shops were back in business, the movie’s moment had passed—which is how I found this gorgeous LP languishing in the discount bin on Black Friday, marked down repeatedly from $30 to $10. Between that beautiful candy purple vinyl and Wyld Stallyns’ decidedly bodacious “That Which Binds Us Through Time: The Chemical, Physical and Biological Nature of Love; An Exploration of the Meaning of Meaning, Part 1,” how could I say no?
