Nothing like watching fireworks on the sock overlooking the water with your little cousin. I love our time together even though we can be completed opposite at times– she’s my little wild child… I love her to death. We felt like kids looking up watching the fireworks and the weather was perfect minus being so close to the fireworks and having them pelt us especially during the finale… We were covering our faces but great way to start Billy Bowlegs this weekend in Fort Walton Beach… Argh matey

Holata Micco a.k.a Billy Bowlegs

Holata Micco, commonly called Billy Bowlegs (ca. 1810–1859?) Known as the “Alligator chief,” he was a Black #Seminole leader who fought in the Second (1835–1842) and Third Seminole wars (1855–1858) against the U.S. government. As more and more settlers moved to Florida, the U.S. was determined to move the Seminoles to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). The three wars resulted in 3,000 Seminoles removed from Florida and more than 1,500 dead. It was a costly, $20-million war for the U.S., which met fierce resistance. After the Second Seminole war, Bowlegs refused to move to Indian Territory and was given a small parcel of land in the Everglades. When whites then encroached upon this remaining land, Bowlegs initiated the Third and final Seminole war, in 1855. It was the last Indian war fought east of the Mississippi. After several years of attacks by the U.S. Army, Bowlegs and his remaining band of 40 warriors resigned themselves to removal to Indian Territory in 1858. There he eventually died of small pox.

Florida Food People: Billy Bowlegs

"In the 1850s, pumpkins played a role in the Third Seminole War, according to historian Jim Robison. The Seminole chief Holata Micco, called Billy Bowlegs, "had tried to keep the peace when the U.S. Army occupied Florida to try to round up the last remaining Seminoles," Robison writes.

"When Army surveyors trashed the chief's pumpkins and the rest of his garden and stole stalks of bananas, he demanded money and an apology." After chief's demands were ridiculed and ignored, he responded with a pre-dawn raid in December 1855 that killed two men and wounding four others. "The bloodshed prompted two years of skirmishes," Robison writes. "Fried pumpkin bread was one of the foods that kept the Seminoles going during those war years."" (source)
