i think intrafamilial racism is something that needs to be talked about more as an experience many mixed people have

my experience is different as someone mixed white, but growing up, my biggest oppressor was my white father. he insisted to me, his mixed thai child, that all thais were horrible people and that his whiteness in me was a gift. most days, he considered me white, but when it was useful or funny to him, i was yellow and a mutt. this left me with a deeply unstable relationship to my race as being asian was associated with traits that my father portrayed as unshakably wrong while whiteness was shown to be morally good

ive never considered myself biracial but maybe i technically am?? i am completely white passing but i am also native american on my moms side (shes somewhere between a quarter to a half lakota), though she was adopted. for me, the cultural aspect is more coming from deliberately reconnecting with other natives as an adult in recent years. but, i also grew up knowing about my heritage (somewhat, the adoption + biological family dysfunction prevents us from knowing much, i might have relatives in pine ridge that i havent met) and being educated against colonization, and i was taught some cherokee legends as a kid (for Reasons). my mom has done more connection than i have but she wasnt able to bring me to powwows or anything when i was younger

but my mom is white passing enough and her adoptive family, the only ones that we really consider family, are white, and my d*d's side is white, so ive never really thought about myself as biracial even though im both white and lakota/ndn. hadnt even considered it until just now really

That HEAVILY relies on context, like for example in anime, the reason there’s a lot of black edits of anime characters is because we barely see ourselves represented in a piece of media we love and we want to see what it would look like if we were in said media.

Sure there’s a lot more black characters being made now but for many years we only got bits and pieces you had to find in hidden gems, and it’s still pretty much like that unfortunately.

And it doesn’t help that when these black characters are actually made in canon people will bitch about their existence or claim they’re not black and act like it’s the end of the fucking world when a black person is represented in anime.

something that makes it harder for me to post about race and antiracism at times despite how much I care about it is my own lack of racial identity. i am black/white biracial but i am very white-passing which makes it feel both like my white peers don’t know my identity and that i am disconnected to black culture and experiences. i am ethnically jewish but not religious enough for it to matter; i’m part of a blended family and I have relatives in venezuela and israel and puerto rico. my culture is both a mix of those and none of those and i am constantly learning about the experiences of those close to me and i can claim none of them without being acutely aware of my white privilege.

despite having a strong sense of identity when it comes to race, not knowing what to do with my curls, having people ask awkwardly “isn’t your dad, like, not white?” i still care so much about how it impacts myself, my family, and the people around me, and i have a place to do so.
