Do we talk enough about the deleted scene in the script that sees Fitzjames, returning from dinner in the rowboat with Franklin et al, give serious consideration to diving into the water to try and save Billy Orren?

On that note, do we also talk enough about the way it plays out in that very early pilot script? How Fitzjames again considers diving in and decides against it, only for Tom Hartnell - who was rowing the boat - to whip off his jacket, fully intending to dive in himself?

How it's Franklin who doesn't know who is in the water, and Hartnell who says "Billy Orren, Sir. That’s who it is. Friend to my brother. And to me."

Ahaha I am a deeply predictable creature and as always have a dæmon au on hand for everything. It’s reasonably basic in principle - not deviating too much from the series - except for everyone having their soul uncomfortably bare and vulnerable, Terror and Erebus being airships, and the funky church politics of His Dark Materials (e.g. John Calvin never breaks from the Magesterium so there’s no Catholic/Protestant divide)

I have a personal preference for people having daemons only of animals they’ve seen, which occasionally gives clues about how old they were when they settled (usually unfashionably late) and where they did it. Francis has a Brown Noddy called Maura, Fitzjames has a Cheetah called Cleopatra, and most other people have more “normal” dæmons

Henry smiled and bellowed an order.

“Ready to let go of—”

There was a lurch and the sharp wail of venting gas as the whole airship reared up. Rebecca took off with a cry as Henry fell backwards, slamming into the railing which shook but held firm.

He looked up at a yowl and saw Billy hanging over the edge, gloves sliding on the metal and legs kicking, his cat with her claws plunged into the walkway.

Suddenly Billy’s hands slipped and he lost his grip with a shout, rattling down the rail until his flailing arm struck a post and he was knocked away from the side.

There was an awful scream and his cat flung herself down the walkway, over the top of Henry as she threw herself after Billy. There was a sharp pain in Henry’s cheek as her claws dug in for purchase in her flight and he felt an agonising kick in the heart of their shared fear. For a moment he was falling too. And then she kicked off the stern into open air as Erebus began to right itself and Billy’s scream cut off into sickening silence.
