Currently reading:

Master and Commander, which I read in discrete chunks of about a hundred pages then put down for another month. Maybe between trains and planes I will actually finish it this time. I’m also going to pack Wilson’s translation of the Odyssey so I can bitch about a movie I haven’t seen from the moral high ground

Currently watching:

Reaction video to the aforementioned musical. I also have twenty minutes of Monsters vs Aliens that I’m not sure I’ll get around to finishing off but I’m not a massive watcher of stuff

Current obsession:

My own fics 😅 Don Carlo in the Costume Institute is wildly out of control at over 70,000 words now so I would call that an obsession even when I’m playing beer pong with different operas

Procrastinating my packing by answering these. I work very hard at my procrastination.

My pyjamas. Actually technically they used to be my mum’s but I am the recipient of most hand-me-downs in this house and then they blame me for having too many clothes. I live in the opulence of “too good for fabric recycling too bad for the charity shop”

EasyJet login spiral. Never have I encountered such a labyrinthine set of rerouting websites with no end, and I am frequently in government webpages so I do not say that lightly.

Mammal in a Sunday Dress explores the uneasy relationship between femininity, civilisation, and the animal body. At first glance, the figure appears modest and withdrawn. Her posture is composed, her gaze seemingly lowered towards her bare feet, recalling the conventions of nineteenth-century portraiture where women were often depicted as passive objects of observation. Yet as the viewer moves closer, the illusion collapses. Her eyes are not lowered at all. She is looking directly back. The delayed eye contact transforms the encounter. The viewer approaches believing they are safely observing a woman; instead, they realise they have been observed themselves. The work refuses the traditional power dynamic of portraiture, denying the comfort of anonymous spectatorship. Looking becomes a reciprocal act. For Cox, the painting considers humanity's persistent desire to separate itself from the rest of the animal kingdom. The title quietly undermines this distinction. A "mammal" is not another creature—it is us. The Sunday dress, rich with cultural associations of femininity, morality, and respectability, becomes an attempt to distinguish ourselves from nature. Yet clothing cannot alter biology. Beneath lace and ritual remains the same vulnerable animal body. The work also reflects on the historical relationship between women and nature. Across art, religion, and philosophy, women have repeatedly been positioned as closer to instinct, emotion, reproduction, and the body itself, while men have been aligned with reason, culture, and civilisation. Mammal in a Sunday Dress does not reject this comparison. Instead, it questions why proximity to nature has so often been treated as something lesser. Chiaroscuro isolates the figure within darkness, allowing the luminous dress to symbolise the performance of civilisation while the bare feet quietly return the body to the earth. Neither is presented as more truthful than the other. The painting exists in the tension between performance and instinct, refinement and biology. Mammal in a Sunday Dress ultimately asks a simple but unsettling question: if every layer of culture were stripped away, what would remain? Not a king. Not a saint. Not a gentleman or a lady. Only another mammal, looking back.

the thing about the concept of gendered socialization is that so many people use it as like another kind of gender essentialism. you know it's not an immutable trait right. you can literally overcome it.

"i'm like this because women are socialized to be shy and quiet and subservient" okay good on you for recognizing it, but that's only the very first step. the next few steps are that you Stop Doing It. feminist thought vs feminist action.

and when ppl see a trans woman being confident and unafraid to take up space and decide it's because of her evil evil male socialization, i'm always like "wait you're saying this woman was raised as a child to be loud and confident and take up space? that's awesome, i thought that's how we WANTED people to raise girls? why exactly is it a problem now? 🤔"

like WHY are you telling trans women that they literally have to make themselves smaller and conform to the WORST gender exceptations of women to be seen as real women. since when is it evil and masculine to be confident, i thought we were supposed to be doing that. i thought that was feminism.

They also treat socialisation as some indelible artefact of the past, not an ongoing process. Women aren't just more shy and cautious on average because they were taught that as small children; they're like that because of the environment they're still in at forty or fifty. It's not some irremovable childhood brainwashing, it's a reasonable reaction to current circumstances. A great many trans women become more shy and quieter after coming out or transitioning because the people around them socially punish them for not doing so, same as previously shy and quiet cis women become more confident and take up more space when put in environments that don't punish them for it. They act like someone's personality and behaviour are branded into them based on whether they have a penis at eight years old, but that is simply not the case.

Whenever I see people who are like "trans women are all loud and aggressive and uncouth (/negative)" I automatically think "do you think black women are all loud and aggressive and uncouth (/negative) too? Because that's what you sound like. You sound like someone who met two or three women from an oppressed minority that were more confident than you wanted them to be, and decided that the whole demographic was beneath you in a different way for daring to not stay in their place."
