hey! i hope dropping a question while you're moving/prepping for moving isn't distracting, but i have a sort of weird question- you paint mostly with oil paints right? how do you dispose of the turpentine/turpenoid and rags and stuff? the only time i ever got to use oils was in a painting class i took one semester and we threw our rags and excess turpenoid into bins that our prof took care of lol i never how where she threw them out or what proper disposal of that stuff should be so im curious
No worries! I always make room for internet-ing....even when I shouldn't.
Anyway. Good question, and while I know the answer I have yet to actually practice said answer. Currently I have a giant stash of rags that I've been using for about 9 months now. I'm trying to get as much use as possible out of these things. They're pretty gross.
Basically though, you want to search for "hazardous waste" along with your hometown and possibly "garbage day". Some towns will host a collection day when you can bring whatever hazardous waste you have to be taken away (this is what I'm waiting for, since it seems to be the easiest option). There are also waste management companies that will take oil based paints, but they might charge per pound. Another option might be to hit up a local college that has an arts program- presumably they have the same collection bins. Whether or not they'd let you drop off old oil tubes and rags I don't know, but at the very least they'd have to use a waste management company to take care of their oil paint waste.
But that's all that I'm aware of, and like I said, I haven't actually done any of this yet. I suppose I'll post an update when it happens lol
