Despicable Me 2 Should Have Had Bi Margo
I know this isn’t Marvel but hear me out!!!
Listen, the whole “dad gets over protective of his daughter because she has a boyfriend” is overdone. But! Here’s the thing, the idea can still work for DM2 but with a nice heartwarming twist at the end that makes the story not so cliche.
Let’s start here:
The conversation should end here. Rather than Gru flipping out about whether or not it’s a boy Margo is texting. It’s a subtle detail that doesn’t draw too much attention to anything LGBT related.
Margo can still fall in love with Antonio:
That can all play out as it did for comedy’s sake etc. but! The change happens during the party.
Consider:
Margo still gets “dumped” by Antonio. However, when she’s sitting alone someone off screen interrupts casually with
“What? Not having fun?”
Margo looks up and gets excited. We still don’t see who it is and then the camera slowly pans over to reveal a girl. You hear Margo say “Avery!” It’s a very subtle call back to earlier in the movie.
A simple convo ensues and Gru idles over.
Avery: “Are our Margo’s Dad? She says you’re really cool. I can see why. Not many dads hang out with their daughters at this age.”
Gru: *whispering to Margo* Who is this?”
Margo: “Oh! Sorry...this is Avery. Avery, this is my dad, Gru.”
Gru: “Ooh, So you’re Avery. Pleasure to finally meet you. I wish we could stay and talk but we have to be going now.”
Avery: “No worries. Just a question. Is your little sister the one dressed like a ninja? Because that’s really cool.”
Margo: “Yeah. She is.” *smiles nervously*
Gru and Margo head off and it’s quiet for a bit. The camera is settled on both of them.
Gru: “I like her.”
Margo: *smiling lightly* “Me too.”
The camera then pans over to Gru and he gives her the softest look ever because he knows. Even if Margo isn’t completely aware. He saw how much she lit up meeting her friend.
And the thing is, this is subtle. It’s not even in your face LGBT content meaning all the super conservative LGBT phobic people can’t get mad over it or are too stupid to realize it. And just to solidify the details, during the wedding seen you can have a small snippet of Margo hanging out with Avery and Gru just gives her this encouraging thumbs up. Something small and sweet. And you see Margo brighten and get confidence and become more animated and less nervous.
I just have a lot of feelings about how this could have been done and I wish that it had.
Also, shoutout to Edith who is the literal personification of me as a child.
