Ooh, I feel like Virgil’s discomfort with certain kinds of affectionate nicknames was foreshadowed a bit in the Fitting In video. 

When Roman called Patton “the softest little puffball we’ve got”, Virgil replied with “you don’t have to be mean to him”.

And while that could be the result of Virgil being used to Roman’s nicknames having a bit of a sting, it’s still telling that he considered that a negative thing to say to someone. 

If he didn’t dislike the thought of being called that himself, he probably wouldn’t have reacted the way he did.

Y'know how in the Crofters musical Virgil popped up in at the end card to make a pun that "Patton paid him a dollar to say" 

Patton could've just made that pun himself when he rose up, couldn’t he?

So what if he did that because he knew Virgil wanted to join in but felt anxious or self-conscious about 'intruding'?

Patton made that offer because he understood that it's easier for Virgil to go "it was a bet" than admitting he wanted to do it. 

It would’ve been Virgil’s first time making a pun himself (unless you count the word play with using a Guys and Dolls song title during 'Exploring Nostalgia') which likely made him more hesitant or worried about it.

And of course Patton wants him to feel free to join in without an excuse to fall back on, but baby steps! It's probably way more effective to ease Virgil into it, and when he sees there's no backlash it'll make him more likely to join in in the future without needing something like that.

Virgil calling Logan "L" was so cute!

And it got me thinking; is Virgil using nicknames to calm Logan or put him at ease a recurring thing? Because I recall Virgil using "buddy" when he was trying to gently say that explaining an insult takes the punch out of it. Are there more instances of this happening that I'm forgetting?

Either way, it makes me love their friendship even more
