I have to trust in the knowledge I gained on my journey but compared to those who get the time to calmly think about the day’s events it’s small.” 

“Is it regional differences, do you think?” She purses her lips, considering this. “I know in some regions, being the Champion is almost like being a movie star, people are falling all over themselves trying to get a piece of you. Though I suppose it could just be that when I first became Champion, I already knew so many of the people in Alola that it was just kind of like, ‘You won? That’s great. Say, remember when you knocked over all the chips at the Iki Town festival?’ or whatever.”

Poor Leon. He’s never going to get away from these Alolan lunatics, is he? At least this one isn’t trying to prove anything (yet) - she’s just trying to flag down a waitress with one hand, while the other sits gently but firmly atop the head of a pink-and-purple Pokémon that’s squealing like the world’s tiniest, most enthusiastic fire alarm. If she wasn’t holding it down, it’d be doing loop-de-loops over the counter and painting everyone’s pancakes with its own ink.

There’s Pokémon training - building their strength and skills until you’re ready to be the very best - and then there’s Pokémon...training, the kind that’s largely composed of, “Oh sweet Arceus! Not on the floor!” and, “No jumpies! What are you doing to that poor woman’s leg?” and “Sit pretty! Shake! Do your little turn on the Meowthwalk!”

Alright, some of those are more applicable to some Pokémon - and people - than others. But when it comes to basic manners, Starr’s Pokémon are mostly well-behaved. Mostly. She doesn’t generally let Nebby or Necrozma float around alone, even in Alola, but Primarina and Lycanroc, or even Silvally and Poipole - enough people know her, and know them, that even with the rarity of the latter, she doesn’t worry too much if they wander away to make googly eyes outside the malasada shop. (”Malasada? For meee? I’m so cuuuute.”)

And this is how Lycanroc, Silvally, and Poipole have ended up outside the mall, apparently running some kind of impromptu carnival. Silvally’s striking a pose, head turning left and right so that the afternoon sun gleams off his armoured frills; Lycanroc’s performing tricks for treats; and Poipole...Poipole is trying to paint the face of every child who walks by (and some of the adults, too), cheerfully squirting liquid colours like the world’s most useless sprinkler. (”Well, the grass is dead, but the yard sure is pretty!”)

It dips its head - and its pen - toward its next potential victim and inquires politely, “...be?”

It’s not Starr who’s travelled through the wormhole today, but her Poipole partner, Sticky. Though she’d been gifted the little Beast by members of the Ultra Recon Squad, it’s shown that it possesses at least some ability to explore Ultra Space on its own, and as long as it’s careful, she doesn’t mind if it takes a side trip now-and-then (and with her own associations with a psychic Necrozma, as well, if anything does happen - with luck, it will call out as loud as it can, and Alola will mount a rescue party the likes of which hasn’t been seen since the Holes had first opened).

It spins and squeals, dips through the golden orbs that Lunala and Solgaleo use to power their journeys, and finally dives through the brightest, whitest Ultra Hole it’s seen in recent memory, so dazzled by the glow that for a time, it can’t see where it’s even going. All it knows is that it craves the light the way a drowning man craves a rope, a desert wanderer craves water, and the grandson of Kahuna Hala craves malasadas.
