Halloween Event—THE WINNERS
Sunset had fallen on the National Park, filling it with fiery oranges making way to dreamy purples. The garden lights were strung from post to post, enveloping the streaming fountain with soft light, its waters cascading gently in the pool below. And all around it, guests in masks and tails and feathers and blood milled about happily, drinks in hand, dressed from head to toe in festive costumes. They laughed and tricked each other with buzzers and jokes. After X-Mas, this was DJ Mary’s favorite time of year.
Performing the role of perfect host—as she had with every event hosted by the Radio Tower—Mary smiled broadly at patrons, Trainers, and investors. If she could make an impression on them, she’d be helping Pokémon internationally. She was giddy at the thought. She’d do her best, for their sake. Leaving one wealthy investor behind, Mary moved towards the fountain to catch her breath. That conversation really got to her!
But this wasn’t about her. At the end of the day, this celebration was about helping abused and abandoned Pokémon find loving homes. She looked at her wavering reflection, wondering what she saw in her face. Was it one filled with hope? Was it one filled with existential dread? DJ Mary shook her head, a smile reforming on her face. She had work to do.
“Excuse me, miss, but what is that?”
It was Ben. Mary turned to meet him, grinning, but stopped short when she saw what he was wearing. Topless, but made over with ears, tail, and a little jingle bell around his neck, DJ Ben was the spitting image of her Meowzie. Which was the costume that she was wearing.
“One of us is going to have to change,” Ben said, beaming, “and it’s not going to be me. It is so embarrassing to be seen wearing the same outfit as you!”
Mary laughed and pushed him lightly. “Ben! What are you wearing!”
“What’s it look like?” Ben grinned wider and gestured to himself. “I’m you, only shirtless and better looking.” He winked. “I’ve even practiced my catcalls.”
The DJ stifled a giggle. Really, he was just ridiculous! Ben moved, causing the lights to move erratically across the ground. Dusk was upon them, the brilliance of orange completely masked by the incoming night. She checked her watch. Goodness! Was it really that late?
“Ben, I’m sorry, I really have to go,” she said, her voice raising an octave. “My show—I’ll be late!”
Ben grinned and gave her a mock salute. “Be gone with you! Your audience awaits!”
And so DJ Mary ran off—but not before giving her goofy goober of a boyfriend a kiss.
