The Bug Club (Monmouthshire, Wales) were first mentioned here nearly 3 years ago. In that time, they've changed a little. First, they are no longer on the label Bingo Records (they've released many great records including Melin Melyn). Second, they've changed their sound some. When we first posted about them, their minimal sound was likened to both Beat Happening and Les Cox Sportifs.

"Rare Birds: Hour of Song" is a hodge-podge of sounds recorded over the past year. This is a double LP and as such, the band called it "a ""South Wales' Double Nickels On The Dime". This has got some weirdness that recalls Gorky's Zygotic Mynci at their finest. But, really, there are sounds that sound like Australian punk/post-punk. Then I saw that this was mastered by Mikey Young.

This is released by Canadian label We Are Busy Bodies.

Concerning the Music of 2026

It’s that halfway point in the year, when jonseing list-makers can no longer help themselves and Best of the Year So Far offerings start sprouting up to remind us of the clock’s ceaseless ticking. All of which reminds me that I should post a link to my annual unwieldy playlist of new and notable songs.

You know, the good stuff, released in the year 2026, or thereabouts. Arranged very specifically, in no particular order. Expect guitars, jazz, space jambs, fizz bops, bleep outs, dreamers, droners, whirlyjigs, and rock-scissor-hammer times. Updated frequently if not constantly until 31-12.

Modern Nature are once again up front, setting the mood. Bingo Records, Breakfast Records — both beloved and representing. Way Dynamic making waves, along with the return of Unwed Sailor. A lot to enjoy, so let’s….

I think that saying that any band from Wales reminds me of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci or Super Furry Animals is akin to saying that any New Zealand band reminds me of a myriad of Flying Nun bands.

But, again, in this case it's true. Melin Melyn (Cardiff, Wales) not only remind me of later era Gorky's or solo Euros Childs, but look at that cover and tell me it doesn't remind you of Gorky's. Frankly, this is the true missing link of Welsh music - this is the perfect combination of Super Furry Animals and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci.

This is released by Bingo Records (Lancaster, UK). This is an amazing pop label responsible for Willow Layne and The Bug Club releases.

After a couple of releases for Philadelphia label Lame-O, Glasgow band U.S. Highball is releasing "A Parkhead Cross of the Mind". We've previously posted about the band twice (use the search function and type "highball"). Surprise! I've got nothing really new to say. This is Ivy League, The Bats, Teenage Fanclub, BMX Bandits, The Kings of Convenience or theCatherines all still come to mind.
