In the 1980s, part-time faculty and full-time teaching positions without tenure hadn't taken over most public colleges and universities yet. Former faculty still dominated top administrative positions. Tuition was rising, but it took administrators with MBAs to make student loans absolute necessities for all but the wealthiest students. It was getting harder to work your way through college, like I had in the 1960s. I knew of some students who were able to, but they either had exceptional jobs for a college student or had a full-time working spouse or partner. Public colleges and universities were becoming commercialized. Don't know if it's a symptom of late stage capitalism, but the equivalent was happening at public hospitals, too.
