Nanotechnology is significantly advancing medicine. Tiny, specially designed particles deliver active substances into diseased cells or have a healing effect themselves. To ensure that this happens as safely and effectively as possible, the behaviour of the nanoparticles after entering a cell must be studied in detail. Synchrotron radiation sources offer the best opportunities for this. In particular, the planned PETRA IV X-ray microscope at DESY promises detailed insights.

Freshen Up

To keep things healthy, most of our organs regularly refresh their component cells. Injured or aged cells are replaced with new recruits, produced from a stock of stem cells that multiply and develop into the required cell type. This routine maintenance occurs in animals of all shapes, including the fruit fly. Despite appearances, the fly’s midgut is comparable to our small intestine, and is a useful model system for studying both organ renewal and the problems that arise during disease and ageing. However, the insights provided by experiments have been limited by an inability to visualise changes over long periods of time. Now a new technique opens a window on the midgut for up to 16 hours (pictured). It reveals a new level of detail to researchers, shows that certain information can only be gleaned by direct observation over time, and provides new opportunities for investigating how organs stay healthy.

Inner Space

Although reminiscent of some kind of stellar or solar eruption, you’re actually looking inside a zebrafish’s inner ear. Scientists are able to make videos like these thanks to a new microscope imaging technique that combines two existing tools, one of which is similar to technology used by astronomers. Instead of pointing it out to the stars, scientists use it to capture the cells deep within living tissue. They then turn a series of 2D images into 3D videos. This particular clip captures a zebrafish’s immune cell as it ‘migrates’ through the inner ear, picking up sugar particles (blue) as it moves along. Rather than confining our studies of living cells to the harsh environment of a microscope slide, this technology allows scientists to witness and therefore better understand how cells behave in their natural environment, even deep inside living tissue.
