Day 2070 - Today I finished the first round of bird surveys that I was hired to do. It’s been a great and intense learning experience so far. Here’s a pic of my most exciting find: a flamingo! (It’s a known vagrant that’s apparently lived in this park for years)
Day 1968 - No rest for the biologists-in-progress. Got home from my travel week of class last night and went out early this morning for a volunteer snowy plover survey. I was rewarded when we spotted a new-to-me species (little blue heron).
Day 1931 - Ended up volunteering to help lead another breeding gull survey to make up for one that got rained out last week. Because it’s later in the season we had a lot more chicks.
Day 1974 - Went out to observe a great blue heron colony and help train some new volunteers.
Day 1995 - A surprise ginormous feeding frenzy sure made my morning of volunteer to count birds more memorable.
Day 1921 - My third and final day volunteering with this year’s survey to count the breeding California gull population. Today was the biggest one and things got intense!
Day 1919 - Went out and volunteered on my first gull survey to locate and count nests like this one. My group found surprisingly few nests today, but that’s still a valid data point!
Day 1928 - Spent my entire day out in the field volunteering with a breeding bird survey. A little (or lot) of rain and wind dampened our data sheets, but not our spirits!
