i suspect i've posted about this before, but on a thorough search of all the relevant tags i could think of i couldn't find it at all, so eh
this is nothing new, really, but it confuses and intrigues me almost as much now as it did a few years ago. what could it possibly be to warrant being posted here, you ask?
why, none other than
THE MYSTERY OF BS01'S BRAKAS PICTURE
the story so far goes kinda like this: years ago, someone (thanks to bs01's data loss a few years back there's no record of who or when) uploaded this image to bs01 for use on its brakas page. they never said where it came from, which under normal circumstances is understandable given that bs01 has no system for declaring image sources like other places do so there wasn't any expectation to bother with doing so
eventually, a discussion started on the possibility of getting a better copy of the image in question because this one's pretty awful, which was when it became clear to everyone involved: nobody had any idea where it actually came from. a few people initially guessed that it originated as a sprite ripped from the old Quest for the Toa GBA game, as it seems like a reasonable match for the style of said game as far as can be told from the blurriness of the image...
...but then it became clear that the brakas actually isn't in said game at all, or at least in the final playable build. similarly, neither the brakas nor this graphic exist in any other bonkles game. needless to say, that left everyone exactly where we were at the beginning, none the wiser to the image's origin
(see also: bs01 people trying to be hush-hush about emulators despite one having been necessary to get all their other qftt images)
five years later, nothing's changed at all. we still have no idea at all where it even came from. according to bs01, the brakas has never even physically appeared in anything, only ever mentioned in passing or in reference books, which i guess means nobody found the answer while i wasn't looking. i've got a rom of quest for the toa sitting around and i'm tempted to see if perhaps this sprite actually IS in the game's data, unused in the finished product, but i'm completely useless at hacking so i'm not expecting to find any answers there
