20,000 @USGSBIML followers on Instagram just happened. About as many as the registered names of bees in the world. Other than our mother USGS account, I believe we are the largest internal group at USGS. We have used our social media platforms (read: we have cool pictures plus writeup intrigue) to reach people who don't read scientific papers or live only to collect bees. Its a good platform, impactful in at least getting people to realize that there are more than 3 kinds of bees. Biodiversity education through pictures books. Oh, we also have 4800 on Tumblr (@usgsbiml), 5900 on Flickr (@usgsbiml), and 2000 in the new Facebook groups (also @usgsbiml), more than 3x the number for our whole research center (not that I am putting out any kind of challenge with that number...). Follow us, it makes the rest of the federal government pay attention (you know, who really cares about a bunch of bugs....)
