hi there, I have a Indian ringneck that was raised as a breeder bird and as a result he was never socialized, he's incredibly territorial and just plain grumpy. is there anyway I can bond with him or try to socialize him so late in his life? I really want to give him a happier life but I don't know how
Definitely.
In fact, Avie was exactly the same as him. A grumpy, territorial, unsocialised bird.
If a bird is used to growing up around other birds - especially in a breeding environment - and then brought into a human environment they need to understand first and foremost that humans are okay and to feel safe.
Being a source of food for a lone bird is the best way to start breaking the barriers of all that fear.
Av is still sometimes skittish towards other people but she’s learnt how to be in these situations and deal with them comfortably.
Keep in consideration you do need to take things slow, and be patient until he is used to you and his new environment. He is only territorial because he is scared and you are invading his personal boundaries.Just do your daily activities, eating breakfast, studying, watching tv around them so they get used to your presence and become curious about you.Feeding millet or a favourite food through the bars of the cage will get him used to your hand being around. Once he’s comfortable; try moving your hand closer up the millet til he’s almost touching it. Repeat these steps in the cage, just know his limits, if he backs away or look uncomfortable you stop and back away too. You don’t want your presence to be negative.
I’d strongly suggest investing your time into clicker training as this can be a very useful, at first hands free method and will provide more stable results in time.Goodluck with your new little fella. Let me know if you need any more help!
