One in six Australian birds are now threatened, according to a study by Charles Darwin University - that is, 216 out of 1,299 species. The study, which included input from more than 300 bird experts, found that climate change was pushing species closer to extinction. The massive bushfires of 2019 and 2020 devastated their habitat, and BirdLife Australia estimates that the number of threatened bird species has increased by as much as 25%.

Bird question

Question for animal people: if a bird lays eggs and those eggs hatch, and now they are little birdies in the nest, does she now sleep somewhere else, to give room to the little birdies? Or does she stay there and squeeze in? I ask because the entryway of my house has this best, and mama bird is ALWAYS there, especially at night, in her nest. I haven't seen her at all in about 2 days. Baby Birds can't go more than 10 hours without warmth and food. Has she abandoned them? Or is she just sleeping somewhere else? I don't know enough about birds to answer this but if a cat ate mama bird, then I want to help them before they die. :/

a real letter to miss manners - LOLZ!!!!!

Dear Miss Manners, I am a professional ornithologist (bird expert) with a substantial record of accomplishments (books, scientific papers, bird blog, website, consultant, etc). My hometown has had a bird festival for the past 12 years and each year they have a main speaker at the festival dinner.

My expertise and experience far outshines any of the speakers by a considerable margin, and I am well known in town, yet I have not been asked to speak. I talked to the festival board members and they say I have not been deliberately excluded, but I have not been given any reason for being ignored. There is no history of bad feelings, but I'm starting to develop some now. This is a personal and professional snub. How do I respond?
