...I saw the silliest black redstart fledglings (4) getting fed outside of a building, and one of them all of a sudden went down the steps very quickly and started to beg to a sibling just to realise that wasn't mom. 😭
After realising the mistake – not sure if confused or embarrassed.
notes: very loud birds!! sometimes annoy people but they're very clever and silly. named myself jay after them
black capped chickadee- "EEEEPeerrr" or "keekeebrrrbrrrbrrrbrrrbrrr"
notes: one of the most common year-round birds around here.. cute little guys. when I was little I would try to sing back to them!! they remind me of my partner
american crow- "AUH AUH AUH AUH"
notes: such silly fellas.. very clever, very loud, very silly, similar to their blue cousins. classic rural midwest corn field bird
red tailed hawk- I guarantee you've already heard this one if you've ever seen a show in/about the US
notes: confusing.!!! too many different variations.... but the ones here are easy to identify when they're always sitting by the highway!! very dramatic birdies. I don't think they need to be doing all that screaming...... excessive
bald eagle- "ē-ē-ē-ē-ē"
notes: sound like chickens sometimes.. how silly! were once critically endangered but now minnesota has the second highest bald eagle population in the country, with around 10,000 birds! they love the river valley!
house sparrow- "chæp"
notes: not a big fan of these ones tbh.. they are invasive here! not very remarkable
wild turkey- "aougugugugu" or "aurauraurauraur"
notes: such goofy little animals. very round and silly.. often see them on the side of roads in the woods
notes: such pretty birds..! always special to see them even if they're very common here. they sound like little lasers
american robin- "aoup eeuwoop ee beeoop brr eeoup" or "ooæææææp"
notes: classic springtime bird!! though they often come back a month or two before the snow actually melts..... don't get your hopes up if you see one in february!
barred owl- "aoot awoo, aoot awooaw"
notes: think about these guys a lot.. such pretty owls. I think every owl I've seen in the wild has been a barred owl! they usually wake up just before dinner so I hear them when I go on walks.
white breasted nuthatch- "eureureureureureureureur" or "euh-uh, euh-uh"
notes: haha breast. haha nut
canada goose- "brrAUGH"
notes: one of few minnesota animals I genuinely fear........
red bellied woodpecker- "BRHRHRHP"
notes: why are they called that? they do not have red bellies. STRANGE
house finch- "bip-bip-baaoowēk"
notes: interesting.. but also invasive!
red winged blackbird- "hü-brēēē"
notes: they love the marshes.. when I was little my mom had those magnetic drawing boards in the car to entertain us so I would use it to keep track of how many red winged blackbirds I saw that year... would often get over 50!!!! so anyways I'm majoring in ecology,
THE HUGE FUCKING CROW IS BACK AT THE FEEDER LMAO!!! it is so funny 2 me because it is like 4 times larger than the next biggest bird that comes to the feeder. Imagine ur a spotted towhee just rolled up to ur brunch spot & some motherfucker who’s quadruple ur size is parked at ur usual perch. I’d lose it
