More Bird Traits AU because apparently my brain has nothing else to waste time on. (I always mean for these to be short, I swear.)

It takes a bit, because when Lucifer eventually emerges from his room, he's an evasive little weasel for the rest of the day. Not to worry though, Alastor is very used to waiting for the best moment to strike.

It only takes until the next morning for Lucifer to let his guard down. Honestly, it's laughably easy to sneak up on anyone in this hotel (barring Nifty; that one eye sees all), so sidling up right next to the king is quick.

"Up so early?" Alastor asks. Because, yes, 10AM is indeed early for the king to be out of bed.

Lucifer's opening his mouth to respond when Alastor's hand meets his back, and all that comes out is a choked noise. The mug in his hand very nearly slips, though a splotch of coffee does hit the floor. The king seems to scarcely breathe, but doesn't move away. It almost seems like he's leaning into it just a bit?

How odd. So far, the results are inconsistent.

Suddenly, Lucifer stiffens up again, practically throwing himself onto the counter to put distance between them. "Ahm- ah, yep! Yes, early. Super. I should go back to bed."

Before he can respond to that outburst, the king is gone in a puff of red smoke and glitter (that definitely does not cause an unsightly coughing fit). That was more what Alastor expected.

Lucifer is a little more on edge the following days, but simultaneously easier to get ahold of. The time between Alastor touching his back and Lucifer running off keeps getting longer; the record at the moment is just over a minute!

Even though the king is developing a tolerance for Alastor's antics (disappointing), he's become more prickly lately. He takes any moment Alastor's not touching him to start a fight about something inane. Which, Alastor is used to, but not this frequently. The carpet design really isn't that important- certainly not worth burning down Room 402.

Overall, this whole thing simply seems petulant. Alastor enjoys the silence when Lucifer runs off, but this fallout is beginning to outweigh it. Though, it seems that not touching Lucifer isn't working. He'd dare say that it's making the problem worse.

**~ Headcanon - Xiao & his bird traits ~**

A few notes about Xiao's adaptial form as he is a bird by design, he can shift between being a predator like bird with sharp talons to the small chubby form that we see from looking at his plushie.

He will sometimes "preen" those closest to him with little nibbles, usually to the individual's cheek or hair. Nibbling or biting is a sort of love language for him, he tries not to overstep boundaries as he respects one's decision.

Another note, he can not lay eggs but if he happens upon a egg just on the ground and detects life within.

His instinct to protect and give warmth to the still growing creature within until it hatches kicks in tenfold, however, he will become highly embarrassed if the Traveler and Paimon happen to see him doing this as he is supposed to be a vigilant and fierce being who protects all of Liyue from the plague of karma, not a nurturing parent huddling a mere egg.

If u dont mind me sharing- I have this hc where hawks use to have a full tail of feathers n jst one day, during an incident where he lost all his feathers, his tail feathers jst never fully grown back. All is left is some plumage (kind of looking like a deers tail) n now is v sensitive abt it bc loosing his tail feathers impacted his flying abilities alot which caused him to use his telekinesis side more (which means more headaches n migraine).

On a good note tho, imagine his tail doing a lil wiggle whenever he gets excited or maybe one day him managing to grow back his tail feathers n is jst bouncing off the walls from how happy he is!!

i’m crying can i adopt this hc 😭 i’m imagining he lost them in some kind of training accident... and i hope you don’t mind some doodles! i love little tail hawks

I’m sorry but the thought of baby keigo hopping around and fluffing up his feathers in response to praise and raptor stress gripping when he’s scared and tilting his head like a bird and everything just makes me so soft I want baby bird(and adult bird) Keigo/Hawks so bad it’s not funny

So, since that madness is over (you know, the one you ended up having to make a tag for)... What are your favourite bird traits for Hawks?

Personally I love stuff like head tilts, preening (which would seriously be needed considering how fast his wings grow back). Or his pupils kinda changing shape like a bird of pray.

I mean, his wings canonically fluff up when he's excited and Mirko does have some rabbit behaviours too, so it's not that far fetched that Hawks would have some more bird traits.

my poor bird traits tag hasn’t seen new content for a while :( it’s time for bird traits! my favourite time of day!! probably said all this stuff before but who cares it’s BIRD TRAITS (and i’m throwing canon out the window too, these are all fanon <3)

third eyelids: i like the potential creepiness of hawks having a third eyelid. it’s important for protection during flight but it’s also neat because it’s not something he could actively control, unlike other traits. so he has to constantly consider and work around it, compensating for his “creepiness” by never staying still enough for anyone to closely watch him blink, leaving his visor down, keeping his eyes half lidded... it affects his entire demeanor

canines: imagine him with sharp little teeth!!! for tearing up meat!! i say little but i’m big on obligate carnivore hawks whose diet is mostly meat, so i think of him as having a whole mouth of sharper than average teeth that can make eating not-meat a challenge

tail feathers: imagine as a little kid he’s got these soft little tail feathers that stick out from under his shirt like a duckling butt... with the commission he ends up plucking them because they push him from “dude with wings” into “actual half bird man” and that’s not on. at some point he grows them out again and they make aerial manoeuvres so much smoother! plus when he’s happy and his wings puff up, his tail spreads and wiggles too :D

side note while we’re on the topic of the commission: i hc that any physical changes they made to his appearance were framed by them as hawks’ own choice. i think emotional manipulation was likely a big part of his childhood and that could extend to manipulating him into wanting his bird traits gone so he could be a “better hero”. they waited until he was at least 12 before doing any surgeries/treatments so he felt like he was more autonomous by making these decisions himself. that way when he looks back as an adult he rationalises losing his tail feathers because he “chose” it

preening but with his teeth... i just think this ones neat, nothing else to say

high places and perching: ok here’s one you don’t see so often! hawks likes to feel tall. he sits on counters instead of chairs (and not just because most chairs don’t accommodate for his wings). sometimes he perches on the edge of his seat like fuckin... L from death note. in a new area he’ll probably beeline for the high ground—it’s the raptor in him that wants to survey the ground below, searching for prey (and his eyesight is canonically super powerful). he’s also capable of floating without flapping his wings because he can just will them to lift, so sometimes he’ll casually hover to be at the same height as his taller peers. annoys the shit out of endeavor lmao

torpor: basically like with asui—cold temperatures cause lethargy and even hibernation. hawks is trained to resist this but he hates cold weather and can feel less alert

nesting: his bed is full of blankets and cushions because it makes him feel safe and almost like he’s being held.... at least what he thinks it’d feel like to be held

mimicking: creepy hawks!!! he’s got bird vocal cords that can mimic voices he’s heard or even invent entirely new voices to use in potential spy/undercover work. it’s unsettling to say the least
