Thao had only recently discovered that some of Skinner's little hideouts still existed around Port Leiry. She had wrongly assumed that when he had been killed, they'd destroyed all the old 'bases' he'd built. The young vampire was sure there would be some still existing outside of the confinements of the town, but they weren't her problem. Port Leiry needed well and truly cleansed of Skinner, and if she were honest, she was hopeful that she could find some information he left lying around whilst they did it.

But she needed Birdie at her side. Someone who knew what she had been through, that shared trauma, and could hopefully keep her grounded, and Thao could return the favour if it were needed.

She made it to the meeting spot they agreed on when it got dark enough, which was thankfully much earlier, with the storm clouding out the sun.

"So he has three bases here that I know of, some outside of Port Leiry too, but they're not our priority. I want to burn them to the ground after we look for information. I'm hoping... I'm hoping that he left notes lying around. I want to find out what really happened to my parents."

        being at a casino is only an invitation to play the games they offer, but vera thinks the watching game suits them better. typically, she’s not one for them. but anemoia is easy enough to indulge in. the watching game is the specific amount of seconds and milliseconds between when you lay eyes on someone, when they realize you’re watching them, and then, further, when they allow you to realize their awareness. birdie and vera aren’t the same, but something they share is the keen familiarity of knowing there are eyes on you. even if birdie doesn’t know, vera’s happy to keep that secret to themself. 

        anyway, birdie’s noticed by now, and whatever taut string had kept them to their vantage point snaps loose, approaching her in that slow, curious way. watching's not productive anymore, nor entertaining.

        “ your posture got worse. ”  really, if there had been any uncertainty about her humanity switch’s status, that detail alone could’ve solved it. the weight of the world had been present at the conclave, too, but perhaps the shine had hidden the dip in birdie’s spine. it’s possible vera could’ve been more focused on the prospect of a clean bird, held together with silver and claws. distraction isn’t an option, but the conclave was both distracting, and ultimately useless more than a gathering of information. separately from their initial critique,  “ you’ve been here more often, how is nsilo? ”

        soleil, very explicitly, is not their domain. they don’t enjoy francoise’s circus any more than any other club filled with burning, bleeding bodies but- it’s easy, and dirty, and free so long as her name’s in their mouth. and it doesn’t even belong to her, francoise only acts like it does, entitlement coming off her on waves of poison and- vera catches a glimpse of pieces of the puzzle she knows to be birdie, and starts in her direction after a moment or two of observation. surprise finds their features through a slight raise of her brow. curiosity strikes too through a flash of dark eyes, as vera wonders if the art that had been drawn over birdie’s skin had been taken or covered. and so seamlessly, too, crafted into porcelain. but it seems they’ve seen her first, and vera’s voice serves as an announcement of their presence.  “ hungry, are we? ”  the distance between them is fair enough for comfort, for privacy, but close enough she can hear them.  “ or have you come for something else? ”  they are vaguely aware of a spinning out, lack of humanity, revenge trip but they’d rather hear about it from birdie.

The house that Lara had ended up choosing was perfectly fine. Jac honestly didn't have much of an opinion on the final choice, as long as she didn't flatten this one too. But that was a concern she hadn't really expressed to anyone else as she walked up the steps.

She's only here today to check out the space that would be hers so she could start thinking about decorating it. Lara had done most of the hard work in hiring people to move all of their things from the old apartment, though Jac's not sure about all of the details and Lara just gave her a look when she offered to help cover some costs once.

The metal key is warm in the palm of her hand, and Jac looks up at the front door like she is in a one-sided staring contest. She had already agreed to move in, but she also knew that it would be different from how things were before, when it was just the two of them. She'd never ask that of her friend either and like with everything else recently, Jac would adjust. Still, it didn't stop the anxiety gnawing at the inside of her stomach.

Jac slips the key into the lock and twists, and the door swings open easily. Things are still haphazardly scattered about, clearly in the process of moving in still, but there are a few familiar pieces of furniture scattered about. And a familiar blonde and tattooed vampire standing in the kitchen.

"Oh I- I didn't know anyone else would... be here," Jac mumbled. Their last interaction at the gala had been tense, but given that they would be sharing space, and Birdie seemed like she was going to stick around, she tried her best to act normal. "Um, Lara gave me a key? I just... I was gonna look around... if that's okay?" / @birdieofprey

while it's true that being kept mostly isolated from the world for much of her formative years has created a loneliness that is so vast, (and typically ends up creating more relationship problems) there's a bright side :D. this is a girl that's been waiting her whole life to love someone, and feel loved in return. it's not only natural for her to be warm and caring, allie genuinely enjoys taking care of someone else, and loving them with all of her being.

ultimately, vera knows birdie’s an ally. a clan-mate, sure, but so was skinner, and given kanemaru’s wide spread nature, a clan-mate could mean anything. birdie has made it clear they’re nothing like him. better, than him. they’ve been meaning to check in on her, for more than just the new little pet project that’s running wild, abandoned. vera’s interested to see how she’s functioning, now that she’s not honed in on a goal of vengeance. how humanity looks on her, after having been without it. her tattoos are back now, too, and vera eyes them with a quiet sort of interest. one hand, gloved in lace, announces their presence with a glancing touch over an inked shoulder.

birdie’s an ally, so it’s a shame that vera plans to rupture her trust for a second time. “ i was surprised to see you here, though i suppose it’s been a while, hasn’t it? ”
