IT'S BIRD MONTH AT LOGAN'S!

Just because the days are shorter and the hummingbirds are gone from our midst doesn't mean we should put our binoculars, field guides, and bird watching plans in storage for the winter.  There are many winter activities we can enjoy as backyard bird watchers.  Providing food, nest boxes, water, and a natural habitat can attract birds to our backyards, giving us much nicer views of them. When done properly, we make life easier for the birds.  Attracting birds is also a great way to introduce young people to nature, and it's something the whole family can share.  Here are a few suggestions:

    Decorate your Christmas Tree: 

Instead of putting your Christmas tree on the curb right away, put it in the backyard as a bird feeder, perch or retreat. Pine cones slathered with peanut butter and rolled in seed make a great treat.  Remember how much fun it was stringing popcorn for garland?  Your feathered friends will appreciate it too (low salt, please). Slices of fresh fruit appeal to a number of birds.  Logan's carries Mr. Bird's hanging seed decorations that look like ornaments that the birds will love. Extend the joy of Christmas to your feathered guests and enjoy them as they flit from treat to treat.

  Feeder and seed check:

Birds don't need our feeders to survive, but let this serve as a gentle reminder to check on your seed stock and on the status of your feeders. Logan's carries a wide variety of seed including Wild Delight, Logan's Supreme Blend, Black Oil Sunflower and Thistle. 

  Switch to High-Energy Foods:

Suet, peanuts and meal worms are great high-energy foods for winter bird feeding. We have suet and seed cake feeders, peanut feeders, and meal worm feeders here at Logan's.

  Attract Seasonal "Guests":

Winter brings birds to our feeders that are only seen this time of year. The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Junco, White-throated Sparrow, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Pine Siskin, Hermit Thrush...these are just a few of the cold weather visitors that you might see at your feeders.

  Check your nest boxes for "Roosters": 

If you have sturdy nest boxes on your property, you may already be providing a sheltered spot for your birds. Check inside your boxes for evidence that birds are using them as nighttime roosts. Your bluebird boxes host as many birds in winter as they do in summer. We also sell roosting pockets to be used in the winter months.

  Provide Birdbaths and Heaters:

A source of clean water, for drinking and bathing, will attract a wide variety of birds to your yard. A heater in your birdbath will enable the birds to drink and bathe during the winter months.
