Good news from @birdscaribbean: Barbuda Warbler, feared extinct, has been sighted on the island of Barbuda! This news comes after Hurricane Irma delivered terrible destruction to the island. @birdscaribbean reported that habitat destruction was near-complete, leaving very little that might provide shelter for birds (not to mention people). The endemic warbler numbered fewer than 2,500 individuals before the storm. But just today, we learned from BirdsCaribbean that eight of the birds have now been signted. A team from Environment Awareness Group (EAG) and the Department of the Environment made the discovery on Sept. 22; additional surveys and conservation plans are in the works.
