Great Egret in Black and White

This is a Great Egret (Ardea alba) captured in striking black and white. The color version of this photograph is equally captivating, with water reflecting a kaleidoscope of vibrant hues—perhaps I'll share that one in the future. I took this image in Georgia a little over two years ago. I love how the water ripples outward in gentle circles from the bird and how its partial reflection adds a delicate touch to the scene.

"Though it mainly hunts while wading, the Great Egret occasionally swims to capture prey or hovers (somewhat laboriously) over the water and dips for fish." - allaboutbirds.org

Angel Wings

Many of the photos that I capture aren't as crisp as I like, but I like the way that they look anyway. This rock pigeon (Columba livia) with white spots is one of those, perhaps the slight blur shows motion.

Blue Royalty

I'm a Dodgers fan myself, but I know there are plenty of Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) enthusiasts out there. As for baseball teams named after birds, the ones that come to mind are the Blue Jays, the Orioles—and, of course, the Cardinals.

Winter's Red Jewels

I took this photo of these Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) this morning from inside my enclosed patio through a window. I could have gotten better images if I had gotten closer, but that would have meant going outside. If I had gone outside, the birds would have flown away, and I would have had to sit and wait for them to return. This morning is not the time for doing that—maybe later.

Some Kind of Ducks

I've been attempting to identify these ducks that I've been photographing swimming around a small lake. Merlin and Google search are all over the place. My field guides are at home. If anybody knows what species these are please chime in. My first thought is they are mallards, but that's a WAG.

Hmmm … if you know what a WAG is you've probably served in the military. 😂

Gray Plumage Perfection

I was sitting outside near Houston , Texas taking pictures of water birds when this northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) landed almost right next to me. The bird was just far enough away that my large camera lens could focus, resulting in this beautiful picture.

You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.

Blackbird Amongst Cypress Greens

I saw this female red-winged blackbird (Taxodium distichum) at Alligator Lake, a small local lake here in West Central Louisiana. I thought this photo of her perching on the branch of a bald cypress tree looked nice.

You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.
