Great Horned Owl
The purple Martin’s of Vancouver Island look unhappy (because I am standing to close to the nesting box) but the have a beautiful purple hue to their dark feathers and create a lovely noise. Nesting boxes are being put up all over the island to help the dwindling population of this bird. It’s presence on the conservation list has people actively finding simple ways to save this bird. The neighborhood is filled with the beautiful happy sound of chestnut backed chickadees. A male red shafted northern flicker is a woodpecker. Their main food are ants and beetles, so you quite often see them forging on the ground. As a woodpecker they bang on things to not only forge, but also as a form of communication and territory defense. Because of this woodpeckers seek out objects that emit a loud sound when they are drumming. This northern flicker is a west coast bird sporting the red under plumage. Spotted Towhees live in dry habitats. Some scientists have suggested that the bold white spots on Spotted Towhees’ backs help them blend in to the sun-dappled undergrowth. I love the way the orange blends into the yellow on the chest.
