The Hauraki Gulf is seabird central! 27 breeding species, hundreds of thousands of petrels, shearwaters, gannets, gulls, terns, shags, and penguins. Rafts of thousands of Buller’s shearwaters waiting for a feed from big fish schools pushing plankton to the surface are a common sight during their summer breeding season.
