I’m back! And today our report on the threats to seabirds in northern Aotearoa New Zealand has been published, outlining what our challenges are for conserving these at-risk species. We also identify what knowledge gaps we need to fill to better protect these birds and their ecosystems, and what actions we can take now to kickstart better conservation management. The Hauraki Gulf is seabird central! 27 breeding species, hundreds of thousands of petrels, shearwaters, gannets, gulls, terns, shags, and penguins. Rafts of thousands of Buller’s shearwaters waiting for a feed from big fish schools pushing plankton to the surface are a common sight during their summer breeding season. A year ago I was heading north to Rangitāhua, the Kermadec islands. Today, I’m off to Te Hauturu-o-toi, Little Barrier Island. Little helper! I've just spent a few days on Tawhiti Rahi, Poor Knights islands, checking burrow occupancy of this season's crop of rako Buller's shearwater chicks.
