Flock Together by Jason Cameron
On the 19th of May 2016, when the hype around the release of Overwatch was still in its prime, father Shane Hickey showcased fanart drawn by his daughter Ava, a fan of the upcoming game, of her own OC named Birst. She wielded a big boomerang, had lasers on her suit, a healing bag of sorts, and could fly. The Overwatch team were touched by Ava's art and, a day later, artists from within the team made their own rendition of the character. Shane recorded Ava's reaction to this and uploaded it online, where she was honestly quite ecstatic.
Also, on the 21st of May that same year, fellow fan Johan Järvinen made a post on the Overwatch subreddit giving his own idea on Birst's potential backstory and abilities, depicting her as an Australian of Germanic ancestry named Ava Martin who lives in the coastal city of Sydney away from the irradiated Australian Outback. While Blizzard themselves never acknowledged this backstory, Shane did and was appreciative of Johan's detailed description. Given how it's been over seven years since Birst was first shown to the world, it's unknown if Ava Hickey would agree with this backstory idea, but you never know.
BURN.
