Everyone is like "yeah! Bi!Cassandra!" but now it's "omg a BI!DORIAN FUCK YOU" ... wtf? As a bisexual person I would like to note how fucking ignorant and shitty this sounds. It's okay to make a straight character bi, but it's not okay to make a gay character bi? Wtf if wrong with you people?
First I don’t like really any romance mods, the only ones I’m even vaguely interested in are Cullen and Solas and that is only because Solas and Cullen were originally scripted for bisexual, like fully voiced dialogue exists within the game and is only cut off by a flag. AND the only reason they were cut was due to time limits.
But as I said, I don’t really like nor use any romance mods. In case you haven’t noticed I haven’t ever talked nor endorsed Cassandra’s bi-mod on my blog for this reason.
HOWEVER, there is something incredibly fucking wrong with making a gay character bisexual versus a straight character bisexual, see here an excellent and well worded explanation of why a gay character being ignored is upsetting to actual gay people versus straight characters who are constantly validated for being straight.
Second of all, there is a huge difference between Cassandra and Dorian, Cassandra’s entire dynamic has absolutely nothing to do with her being straight. She could be bisexual and her story would never change. She is a character that just happens to be straight, how fucking ever Dorian is a gay character, written by a gay person, about a gay experience that effects many gay people in real life. His story is that of the gay community and by using a mod that pretty much backhands that idea, invalidates his entire character and does the exact thing his FATHER tried to do.
Anyone who mods Dorian to be straight is completely discrediting him, Dorian knows who he is. He isn’t at a place where his sexuality will change, he is not that person and he “wouldn’t like that person”. If you mod a character to be bisexual or straight, a character whose entire arc is fighting against that, you cannot say you love that character. You are ignoring who that character is just so you can date a hot dude, that’s ignorance, among other things.
Not to mention, there is specifically a straight mod for Dorian now. Not a bisexual one, as in you can only romance Dorian with a female if you use the mod and that should show you how sickening the whole idea of this is.
The shitty thing here is that Cassandra is a character that loses nothing by becoming bisexual, straight people she represents lose nothing because they still have more like her (Morrigan, Ashley, Miranda, etc.). While Dorian and all those who relate to him lose everything when made bisexual or straight, it is the loss of the first gay man (companion) romance in Dragon Age (and Bioware games).
It is the difference between writing a straight character and writing the story of a gay character. And in a “perfect” world, where gays and lesbians were properly represented, where straight isn’t the “default”, and bisexual isn’t a catch all used by others (often not bisexuals) for their personal convenience, I wouldn’t give any fucks as to what mods exist. But this world isn’t perfect, people are assholes, and I’m still going to say that anyone who thinks bisexual or straight Dorian is okay, for whatever reason, can get the fuck off my blog.
