It’s been a while since I’ve listened to something and thought, “That is one of the best things I’ve heard in a while.”  Workhorse is a Brisbane, Australia band, and their album “No Sun” has just been released on Tenth Court.

This has some countrified feel to it, but this is a rock record at heart.  Katie Schilling’s voice can be clear or reverb drenched.  The songs are varied, but the guitars crunch and the music is persistent.

Liam Kenny is in this band - he might be best known for his work with Bitch Prefect.  The music also reminds me of The Renderers.  And finally, some of the guitar work/songwriting recalls the first Dick Diver album, “New Start Again”.

ALBUM: Liam Kenny & Jack Farley - A Kenny for Your Thoughts

This is just an ordinary covers album. Covers suck so just listen to something else. But really, if you're ready to stop reading after two sentences this is probably not the album for you. When the press releases describe Liam Kenny and Jack Farley's A Kenny for your Thoughts as an attempt to change the way we see covers, I didn't really know what to expect, but now that the album is in my ears and staying there, I think I understand. 

Perhaps this is an intense shots fired to Like a Version and all their worthy adversaries to make us think about how a song's quality by aesthetics and not feeling, as K&F take songs that already exist, and  expand on/manipulate what the original material is trying to invoke, with incredible precision. "Never Ever" is a reminder of the depth that could exist in all shapes of music, almost an invitation to expand one's musical horizons. Kenny's range is clear even superficially, from the diversity of the source material that is used, and he and Farley do an extremely good job of creating a very impressive musical experience. This isn't a covers album. This is music.
