3 Lessons I Learned From A Young Startup Founder On A Short Road Trip

Running Collab House, I have the opportunity to meet and interact with different kinds of people from Startup, Technology and Creative community. Prasant Garapati, recently pinged me about a event happening at BITS Hyderabad. I met him very briefly couple of times before that, I thought why not plus I didn’t had any plans for the day, so I signed-up. We went together to the event. Prasant is a co-founder of Commut, they are a young team, doing pretty amazing work, already created a great impact in the city. They raised around $200K last year. There were a few little things that caught my attention interacting with him, which are great takeaways for me. This is my view and generalizing it below: 1. Hangout and learn from interesting people * Along with me, Prasant invited a few others who were working on interesting things, one of his friend who joined us on the drive was a CTO at a startup which created a lot of buzz and went viral few months back, he built the architecture for their website to manage those millions of visitors.

Step 1: Think of all the interesting people outside of your regular circle/ network. Find or plan a excuse/ activity and invite them! 

2. Explore and have curiosity * Prasant proposed about visiting his friend who was doing Polyhouse farming close by to the campus we were visiting. There were exciting things happening at the campus and we could have easily spent through the day there. But he was excited about the farm visit and said is passionate about agriculture.  

Step 2: Explore and find a activity or regular things that you could think of, Example: like a Sugarcane machine. Go to it, be curious, act as if you came across a Tesla car or something that will make you curious(now you know what makes me curios!).

3. Think like an Entrepreneur.  * From campus we left to his friends Polyhouse farm. Prasant asks a lot of questions, lot of valid questions. Asking about the business economics, model, operations, sourcing, raw materials, and very minute details. Though this was nowhere close to his work, he clearly had that curiosity and this entrepreneurial mindset, I haven’t seen many who could ask such relevant questions. He, his friends and I were able to learn a lot more than I could think of. It is so easy to get distracted/off-track or loose in the moment.

Step 3: Ask the person running the sugar machine as if you were getting into that business and he/she is your only source! Bonus if you signup that person as a advisor/ mentor!

I learned that just with a bunch of interesting people, a pinch of curiosity and being able to ask right set of questions you can have a great learning from any given situation. What do you think?
