Learning Language Tips
I have spent my toddler days watching Chinese operas. This includes writing all of the characters and what I now know as echoing everything I heard in full sentences. My neighbors were Columbian and their mother was determined (like most Spanish families) that I was going to learn the language of the house. In my house, we spoke only English; but I was drawn to the Chinese opera. It appeared almost as if I was reconnecting with a previous life. As I became older I dedicated time to how to read and write only because I had no one to verbally converse with; and by the time I did have a conversing partner they were not in the dialect I had spent years studying. I took 8 years of Spanish, a semester of Italian, a few classes of French, dipped into Arabic, read Tagalog books, spent a summer reading Vietnamese and spent many years studying Japanese. I am not a linguistic genius but I adore culture and language. The art of communication intrigues me on levels that I truly feel there are not enough languages in the universe including body language to truly express oneself. After many years of personal grueling study I can comfortably speak Japanese, read Chinese on occasion (when I don’t mix up the languages) and when I am around my best friend I will speak Spanish with his mother. I encourage my best friend to take up Japanese for the sake of expanding his horizons; but he consistently struggles and will complain it’s too hard. I found Japanese to be easy. I find most languages easy.
Here are my suggestions to thinking like a native
The true key to dominating any language and to think like a native is the ability to fathom their grammar structure. For example in Spanish, to present ownership between nouns often “Del” or “De La”, in Mandarin Chinese in pinyin format it is “Wo3De” for my, Japanese in Romanji it is “Watashi no” and of course in English we have a complete set of words just for possessive nouns from My, yours, his, hers and ours. Once one has taken the time to learn the grammar before trying to dominate and memorize vocabulary; adding the vocabulary after is the easy part. Do not be ashamed if you’re speaking in small sentences because if you can say those sentences very well (much like you did as a child speaking a native tongue) then extending your vocabulary to complete complex sentences will be much easier. When I switched from Chinese to Japanese to join my friends in the J-Drama obsession I struggled often because as odd as it sounds I actually thought in English and Chinese (I still do); but the grammar is not the same so I had a terrible time trying to learn. I became incredibly frustrated because I couldn’t complete simple sentences that I can say now. It wasn’t until I stopped to study the grammar that I began to truly grasp it and shut off my Chinese mind. I found myself being able to adapt into a Japanese way of thinking. I could barely say anything but if I could say something; I said it well.
Immersion. It is the most obvious step but if you lack people to practice with because you’re like me and find even speaking in English awkward then another language would be no different. I started attending Japanese restaurants and would try my best to speak to them by making orders and asking basic questions. If I was in a Spanish restaurant I would try to emulate the origin by blending in because I understood the grammar and wanted to learn how to speak like a native. Although many Spanish speakers tell me I have a Dominican/Columbian/Mexican blend depending on the words…it’s pretty easy to tell who I hang out with obviously. In the big apple, it is kind of easy to find someone speaking another language and that is when eavesdropping comes in handy. Please don’t be as bad as I am! I lift my ears and peer behind my long hair and chinky eyes; which somehow alerts the speakers that there is a serious listener nearby. Television and movies are a great way to introduce yourself to the proper or more acceptable grammar, phrases and vocabulary; particularly soap operas. As a woman, I hate soap operas but I realized they have a purpose; even in English soap operas carry the way an American speaks English properly but not too properly. This format seems to trickle through all soap operas. I also like to download songs I don’t understand just because music is a great method to learning the short cuts. I picked up pieces of Portuguese by listening to Bossa Nova music. I don’t speak a word fluently but I learned the song and I learned the vocabulary meaning. Sure, now I can sound like a suave young woman picking up another woman even though I am straight; it may come in handy someday who knows. Of course there is the classic consideration of joining a group through Meetup to see if you have someone to converse with.
Books. I do not mean only buying the “Learn a language in a 3 days fluently”, the dictionaries or whatever language books that will teach you but I mean purchase books in that language. I would suggest a child’s book. While you are reading the book have a dictionary nearby and no matter how long it takes to complete a book; READ IT! This forces your brain to truly be emerged into the language as if it is native to you. I have books in languages that I cannot read yet because I know I will learn it someday. For example with Japanese, I stopped by NYC’s famous Kinokuniya and marched down to their kids section and bought baby books, baby word puzzles, kindergarten books to 5 grade reading level books. I would read these books on the train, on the bus, in cafes and anywhere or anytime I could use to read them. So trust me when I say this, get a language dictionary and a child’s book until you feel ready for the big books. However, if it is a language that has a basis of Latin it could be good to start at a middle school or high school reading level. It may take just as long to read the book but it is a big difference in relearning a word in Spanish compared to looking at the strokes in Japanese or Chinese and having to look it up.
Small Suggestion for those who are like me. Write whatever vocabulary you use on a loose leaf paper over and over and then write a sentence with the word at the bottom. The excessiveness forces your brain to memorize the word or character like you did when you first learn the alphabet.
And if you’re up for a crazy challenge, change the settings on your phone and try using it. I would advise memorizing your settings to go back to the native language but I do this all the time. It forces me to read everything opposed to just tapping it and not paying attention. Once you’re able to do the same with your phone with a foreign language like you do with your native language; then I’m pretty sure you’re set.
Hope these tips help and good luck!
