Oh boy. Bitter Virgin. If you’ve never heard of it, be warned that it’s an extremely dark manga with very serious subject matter and themes.

Bitter Virgin is a seinen manga by Kei Kusunoki. According to Wikipedia it is about “high school student Daisuke Suwa and his classmate, a girl named Hinako Aikawa, as well as the relationship that develops between them soon after Daisuke discovers a tragic – and very personal – secret that Hinako has been forced to bear on her own.”

The manga begins with Daisuke Suwa (who, frankly is kind of a dick at first) saying that he would date every girl in his class except one--Hinako Aikawa. Everyone thinks that Aikawa is putting on a sweet virgin act (when touched by men she has strong negative reactions) and as a result, it annoys Daisuke (as well as some other boys in the class). However, it is only when Daisuke accidentally hears Aikawa‘s confession in a church that she was sexually abused, raped and impregnated by her stepfather twice while her mother did nothing does he start to realize he’s been kind of a dick.

Of course, Daisuke doesn’t want to believe that something this horrible has happened to someone he knows, so it’s only when he accidentally sees Aikawa‘s C-Section scar after they save a baby in a run away carriage does he realize she wasn’t lying. Then Daisuke starts to fall in love with her.

While Daisuke is falling in love with her he also has to deal with Kazuki, a classmate who is obsessed with him and basically forces him to be her girlfriend and Yuzu, another classmate and Daisuke’s childhood friend.

Needless to say, the plot of Bitter Virgin is extremely dark. However, it is definitely worth the read. There are 32 chapters, so it’s not lengthy but still has a lot of substance. While the art style can be off-putting at times, the character development is excellent and the story flows nicely. The ending was a bit disappointing, but still sweet.

I give Bitter Virgin a 9/10. I would read it again.
