From the Pioneers of Stop Motion Animation File: What did we do with our lives before YouTube came along? Seriously! This gem from 1930 has always been one of my all-time favorite animated shorts on YouTube. It features comedian Charley Bowers (1889-1946). and a "Metal Bird" that eats car parts, lays an egg and when the egg hatches, a fully-functioning Model T emerges. The animation is quite remarkable for 1930 - easily 50-60 years ahead of its time. I never really knew about Bowers or his work until I saw this film a few years ago. He has an interesting history. He was a silent film comedian who blended pioneering stop-motion animation with comedy. Apparently, when he died in '46, he'd already fallen into obscurity years earlier. Too bad, because he's incredibly creative. The DVD Journal published an interesting short article on his work that is worth reading. A collection of his films was released in a two-DVD set called Charley Bowers: The Rediscovery of an American Comic Genius. Maybe Bowers is finally getting the attention he deserves.
