Real Talk By: KJ
Just when you think you’ve played them all, a surprise comes out of nowhere. This may be a good thing or bad. Regardless, this particular game left an impression on you. This past weekend we held our 4th annual Play Legit Holiday Meet.
After the blind gift wrapping we proceeded to play various arcade games. After playing Time Crisis 4, Police 911, Tekken 5, and others, we leaned toward the rarities. One definitely stood out.
Derby Owners Club is a four-player game. Horse Race against friends and the computer at the same time. Before you can make it that far, each person has to pick two-horses of their choosing, making them breed. You then train and race with the offspring. That entire process was a true snooze fest but unforgettable to say the least. Racing mainly is all about watching the horses stamina, trying not to over-exert the animal while making it in first place. The real entertainment came from Cmack and Jason yelling at the screen.

Bonus Round: Hatoful Boyfriend Review
by Simon Fong
Bonus Rounds are short, 5-minute musings on quirky titles that either end up hidden down the back of the sofa, or lost among the endless pile of Steam games and Bundles you own, but have never got around to playing. These could be reviews of PC, iOS or console games, Early Access titles, games ...
OMG! WAVES IS THREE FREAKING MINUTES LONG!?!? I'M WELL ENTRENCHED IN THE TOP 1% OF THE SCORE BOARD ON WAVES, AND I'VE ONLY MADE IT 1:30 MINUTES IN!!! WTF!?

So, uh, yeah. Go pick it up if it pans out, I guess.
Shine on, you crazy diamonds.
The fact that I'm saying "Funcoland" and not "Gamestop" should imply how long ago this was, as should the fact that it was only released for the PC as a secondary console--this was back when they thought interactive movies would be the next big thing. If you never heard of that premise, it's because it sucked.
Anyway, Tender Loving Care was a truly bizarre little game. You pointed and clicked, but the only actual impact you could give the story was by answering questions--the review I linked to sums it up really well. It lauded the psychological technique of Thematic Apperception Tests (TAT), which is basically Rorschach testing but with actual images instead of abstract blots, and frankly railroads the testee pretty hard. Even at eleven, I was skeptical, and while I can't remember the exact results, I remember them contradicting themselves somehow.
So this game wasn't accurate. What it WAS was hilarious. Megan and I both played our own files to get our own "readings", but we watched cutscenes together, and they were narmy as hell. Psychotic lesbians with sledgehammers? Psychotic lesbians with sledgehammers.
The game is sex-loaded even if you don't nudge it in that direction with responses, since a large part of it is noodling around the house and finding documents/tapes/etc., most of which are sexual for some reason. You can find a book on tantric sex in one room and listen daily to a Loveline-esque radio program. It was pretty heavy stuff considering my age, and it actually kind of surprises me that I didn't feel guilty as hell playing it. Probably it's that we honestly had no clue what we were getting into when we bought it, so I could plead the fifth.
It had some weird creepy stuff too, if I remember correctly, mainly focusing around the wife's delusions re: REALLY OBVIOUS PLOT TWIST, and also some of the art shown during the TAT sections.
I don't think about this game very often, but when I do, I really want to play it again. What's more than that, I want to LET'S Play it. I think it'd be an absolute trip for everyone involved...except that I've never done an LP before, and first LPs always suck. But the urge is there nonetheless. It'd be especially good as a stream or something so everyone could vote on answers and totally screw over the AI's profiling, but I know even less about streaming than I do about LPing.
Anyway. I dunno why I'm bringing it up, since I'm pretty sure the game (all four clunky discs of it) is long gone, and I doubt I could find a replacement. But I've certainly put worse rambling rants on Tumblr, so there you go.
