Robert Glasper at The Mint

So what had happened wuzzzz (insert lip pop), I was having a bummer ass Wednesday. While I was doing my dual social media thang I ran across a post on Robert Glasper’s IG that stated that there was a third show added to his Grammy Weekend jam in L.A. The first two sold out so fast that they had to add a midnight show. When I saw that the venue was “The Mint”, I was definitely down. 

I adjusted my attitude and ordered a ticket for one -per usual- and got my life. I even used a screenshot of the ticket to send a “this could be us, but you stupid n%$ga”, response to a text - again another story-. 

Anywhoo,  I made sure that my Saturday was nothing but chill so that I could be all ears at the midnight show. I pressed my grown lady Bisou Bisou one piece, did a light beat and stepped out. I pre-gamed at “The Little Bar”,  on Miracle Mile and got my mind right for the show. This spot was cozy and had the bomb taco truck out front.

11:30 p.m. hits and I am out the door to experience the epicness of Robert Glasper and the crew. My friends and I walk up to the line that was two blocks long, and because we checked in at the previous show we were able to skip it all together.

Once inside I picked my spot in the corner and chilled with a nice frothy “Cocoloso”. As I stood by the door I watched greatness walk passed me. I first caught  a glimpse of Goapele and I knew that, that was a great sign of the treats in store for the night. Next, I locked eyes with Raheem Devaughn and greeted him with a toothy grin - that’s my baby father in my mind BTW-. Then, shortly after that B.J. The Chicago Kid walked in and we had a Midwest moment where we dapped and hi-fived about our origin. At this point I am super geeked and ready to see what the night has in store. Lastly enters Bryan Michael Cox, whom none of my L.A. friends know cuz they from L.A. smh.

The show starts and what seems like an empty room begins to fill to capacity. The air is shut out and the only thing left in the room is the smooth sounds of the band and Chris Davey’s synthesized voice. And the crown goes wiiiiiiild. They jammed a bit, each of the artists mentioned above sang an impromptu improvised song. Everyone was enjoying a wonderful RARE piece of neo soul heaven for the moment. The saddest part was the end. 

However, even when all good things come to an end, you end up being the last one to leave because you spent a long ass time in the ladies room in line; plus trying to pull your fierce one piece up and down. You walk out of the bathroom and BAM!!!! There’s B. Cox and Raheem, so you stop and chop it. Then you tell your friends OK let’s go and you walk outside and meet a real live beauty queen from Bedford, Ohio and you start calling her Ms. Barry.

Lastly, security buys you a drink and you can stay, but your friends gotta go so you leave with them ‘cause you ain’t trying to be on a milk carton. As soon as you walk outside there stands Goapele, Carmen Rodgers, and members from the group solo. 

Simultaneously,  Robert Glasper himself walks up and you get to wrap your arm around him like a pal and tell him all about the love in your heart for his music and then the night is complete....At least for that event. Where I went after that is a WHOLE other story. Can you say fab L.A. meet’s after hours? Yea. Stay tuned to more ”Midwest Girl In A Cali World.”
