Jay Som - Anak Ko (@polyvinylrecords) This feeling of looking backwards and gazing ahead can be heard on the first two tracks – “If You Want It” and “Superbike.” “If You Want It” is a backwards glance at an unappreciative relationship, wondering how someone can move on so quickly. Even as she reflects, she’s already thinking of the next thing, Speeding down the freeway, late at night, is a good image for Anak Ko. It’s mostly driving, forward, moving ahead, occasionally shooting glances at the rearview while simultaneously monitoring the glaring red tail lights up ahead. Listening to Anak Ko does give the uncanny sense of the familiar. Those familiar elements come so fast, so furious, however, that trying to track them will leave you feeling dazed. It’s like some surreal, futuristic collage, assembled from pieces of the past but then woven with neon, Christmas lights, and LEDs. Anak Ko is a perfect opportunity to assess the current state of music and creativity. Melinda Duterte largely works in a vacuum, delivering missives from her hermetically-sealed bedroom universe. She’s clearly well-versed and immersed in sounds both contemporary and influential. She’s got a firm understanding of the last 3 decades of indie rock, delivering lo-fi gauzy ethereal 4AD chills and thrills through a sharp, focused 21st Century lens. Yet she takes those pieces and makes them her own, creating chimerical indie pop songs that are both familiar and strange. As a Filipino-American, I am so happy to have a fellow Pinay actually in the indie circuit to follow that creates music I love... and that even showcases her Filipino roots, teaching indie kids Filipino. I remember Japanese Breakfast saying she wanted more Asian Americans to create music, and Jay Som, a friend and musician adds to those artists.
This was the very first tour date for her Anak Ko Tour and Melinda brought along two bands... Affectionately and Boy Scouts that have outputs that pair well to Jay Som’s music... I especially liked Boy Scout’s set and later found a former local act, Stephen Steinbrink connection... I believe he produced their album and I love it as much as Anak Ko.
