Tbh, and this is just my personal opinion: Blind Box BJD > 3D printed BJDs. IN TERMS OF QUALITY! I dislike the blind box aspect of BB-BJDs, it's very unnecessary. But looking at videos testing quality of these things, the basic 3D printed ones just seem like a huge waste of money and resources.
And all in all, neither of them is particularly more "eco friendly", and in some aspects I'd say 3D printed ones are worse. With context. Eitherway, both'd end up in a landfill.
BB-BJDs add to wastefulness with the packaging, and the blind box aspect. Blind boxes in general are going to be more wasteful because it encourages purchasing more.
But! Nobody can deny that BB-BJDs have proven to have some pretty high quality. If they stay this high quality long term, then they might at least be interesting for people to get on the second hand market, or thrift stores.
Meanwhile 3D printed dolls fall into that same pitfall as all those 3D printed dragons, the gimmicky "fidget" prints that have painfully obvious points of strain. And anyone pretends that the "misprints" and other fuck-ups aren't an insane waste of filament and/or liquid resin has to be ignorant of the waste levels on 3D printers. The printing lines are also a huuuuuuuuge MINUS. People have already posted entire threads complaining about the slightest flashing on poured dolls. 3D printed dolls, filament, are that but all over the body. You end up with a doll which might be unique, but also will not hold up longterm. Breaks more easily than traditionally BJ-poured resin dolls of the same size, and probably has less of a chance on the 2nd Hand market than any other type of doll. 3D printed dolls always felt like something for people who make the first draft, and then have to spend another 100 hours sanding, fixing, and preparing that model for a final mold to do resin poured dolls instead.
I have less experience with liquid 3D printed dolls, but if certain aspects from the garage kit also apply, then they'd have problems with lack of detail, warping, and also the breaking issue, and all the "pockmarks" from the support beams.
