A Day In the Life: BKK
I want to provide a quick glimpse into a typical day for me in Bangkok. Yes, the weekends can be filled with splendor, and of course I love the crazy nights out or the awesome adventures we take, but I also find joy in the simple 9-5.
A normal day in Bangkok begins at Meet and Mouth Coffee. It's a small coffee shop in the building that our apartment is attached to. Thailand is PACKED with coffee shops--I swear that on any given street you'll find five stores lining both sides of the block. An iced coffe can range from 20 B if you get it in a 7-11, or as much as 200 B if you find yourself in a trendy lounge. I always opt for my 40 B iced coffee from Meet and Mouth because a) it's a great price b) it's convenient AF and c) i've reached regular status--the awesome staff of 3 will spot me approaching and start fixing my "thai iced coffee". I'm normally not a big coffee drinker, but this stuff is a super sweet, and probably intensely caloric version of the stuff you get at home. On weekends, Luche and I head down for our cup of sugar joe and up the ante by adding a banana waffle. My adventurous boyfriend will say this is the best Thai food he has had in Bangkok. Amateur hour.
*note my 100 B manicure
On workdays, breakfast is almost always in the hand of my #1 gal pal, Mao. I typically refer to Mao, with the most respect possible, as Tofu lady (there's a trend here). Girlfriend hooks it up! She's just the absolute cutest, always checking in on me with great concern if I take a day or two off from the tof--"I did not see you yesterday! Where were you?" Sometimes I'll stop at her stand even when I don't want her delicious spring rolls or tofu out of loyalty. And for the low price of 20B, I can afford to.
After wrok, some unwinding is much needed. If you can stand the heat, or there's a Bangkok breeze, send it to Benjakiti park. It's a beautiful place to go for a run or post up for some yoga. This gem has been a real life saver when I've needed a break from city life. And, like everything else I've mentioned, it's right around the corner.
Dinner can be a mixed bag. My expat crew and I are all guilty of jonesing for western staples from time to time-but we pay for this, literally. To satisfy our pizza or Mexican food craving, we shell out 200-300 B. Resisting is made even harder when you're located right next to Pala Pizza, where you can order a half meter of Margarita pizza and forget you're in Aisa for the five minutes it takes to stuff your face with it. Same goes for Sunrise Tacos, an establishment equally as close and even more frequented by Luche and I. We will shamefully smile back when we are welcomed by the kind wait staff with a snickered "good to see you again!"
Luckily, there are tons of delicious alternatives to these tempting but pricey hot spots. The best curry I've had is at the self-titled "Thai Restaurant" just a block from my house. It has the perfect amount of "pet" (spice) and the consistency is heavenly. A meal with a large Singh or Chang is cheap nd well worth it. On the most lazy of nights, I'll head down to the Japanese restaurant and get a few delicious rolls.
If it's been a particularly stressful day, exciting day, or just a day, you can probably find me at our neighbors--the beer garden. Seated literally right next to our apartment is a beautiful outdoor bar where you can pick at edamame and sip on a pint, pitcher, or even tower of Thai beer.
Seeing as it's 4pm on a Wednesday, I'm getting ready to head to the park for free Yoga and maybe hit up Witches for free wine, located just a few bts stops away.
Until next time!
