Developing an alternative to Police for Black Neighborhoods
Sandra Bland + my old mentor been on my mind as of late.
I’m looking at my phone + skills + where I am at life. And I’m thinking “we need the police to have a functioning neighborhood.” And then I stopped and wonder... “what if we don’t?”
I met my mentor through a service that he set up called a “freenet”. Back in the 90s, the Internet as you know it right now was a bunch of bulletin boards and text browsing. Graphics would be the next big thing. But text was it. Pico would be the Gmail of that era. The freenet, however, was free and that lead me to the person who would eventually teach me to become a web developer. My point is, he gave away something that would benefit the community and for a minute, I was thinking I have to pay this kindness forward.
I thought it would be through the hashtag project and I’m still volunteering my time on that. But I feel I can do more than that.
Then Sandra Bland came to mind and that “it’s time” video. I’m thinking “what if I can use my phone as a way to help internal affairs within my own community?”
So, that’s what I’m writing about. I’m thinking of a way developing a network of Black hackers and coders along with people who can help me develop a system where we can self-police ourselves.
I would like to implement this plan within a 10-year span.
Yeah... 10 years. That’s a long flipping time. But I would like to commit myself to something bigger than me. So, if you have a talent that can help me make something out of this, let me know.
