Black Dolphin Prison
Federal Governmental Institution - Penal Colony No.6 Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in Orenburg Region.
Correctional facility in Sol-Iletsk, Orenburg Oblast.
Operated by the Federal Penitentiary Service.
Reputedly one of Russia’s toughest prisons.
Located close to the Kazakhstan border.
It is also one of Russia’s oldest prisons, and one of the first to take solely prisoners sentenced to life.
It gets its unofficial name from a fountain with a sculpture depicting a black dolphin, which is set before the main entrance to the prison. This sculpture was made by the inmates themselves.
November 1st 2000 - began holding only prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment.
The prison houses approximately 700 inmates, offenders include (but are not limited to):
Child molesters.
Murderers
Terrorists.
Cannibals.
Serial killers
Maniacs (some self-described)
** It should be noted that the prison employs approximately 900 guards/security persons. The ratio of guards to prisoners does not drop below this level.**
Guards place blindfolds over the eyes of arriving prisoners so that they cannot take in their surroundings and map out the prison. This prevents them from attempting to formulate an escape plan. Prisoners are also blindfolded when transferred between the different buildings within the prison.
When being moved, prisoners are kept bent over at the waist, while a guard holds their handcuffed hands behind their back - higher than their waist/hips.
This ‘stress position’ allows for maximum control over the inmate, while depriving the inmate of a view of the surrounding area. It also prevents them from attempting to escape or attack a member of staff.
Guards are accompanied by a dog-handler and their dog (generally a Caucasian mountain dog, or a cross of this breed), these dogs are specifically trained to attack prisoners.
Inmates are kept isolated and housed in a cell that has three steel doors for walls.
For 90 minutes a day, they are transported to a larger cell for exercise (their ‘home’ cell is searched for prohibited items during this time).
There is 24hr supervision.
Prisoners are not permitted to rest or sit on their bunks from the time they are woken, until lights out at night.
Guards make their rounds every 15 minutes.
Inmates are fed soup four times a day.
Prisoners are allowed books, newspaper and a radio.
When an officer/guard makes a command, the inmate must respond with yest’, grazhdanin nachalnik (yes, chief citizen).
