Disco #26: Yussef Kamaal – Black Focus

Desde que empecé a escuchar el “Voodoo” de D’Angelo (#8), como dije en la reseña de ese disco, empecé a escuchar todo tipo de música (y en ese momento, abandonar un poco el rock y metal en pos de descubrir nuevas cosas). Una de las cosas que empecé a descubrir, y después empecé a escuchar con más ganas, fue el Jazz mezclado con la movida Neo Soul, lo que derivó en movidas tales como el Future Jazz o el Nü Jazz, que juntaban las improvisaciones del jazz basadas en el período eléctrico de Miles Davis, mediante el filtro de profesionalismo de la escena en los años ochenta, noventa y principios del 2000.

Ejemplos hay varios, de hecho Sade en los ochentas fue una buena muestra de ello. Pero aún era muy suave, muy “smooth”, lo que hacía que sonara casi como música de bar. La gracia de la mezcla actual con la movida Neo Soul, es que ya no es solo para tener como música de fondo cuando haces algo, sino que es algo a lo cual obligatoriamente tienes que ponerle atención (no por nada, el neo soul tiene góspel, lo que hace que en algún momento de la canción pareciera que estás en una iglesia afroamericana).

Aparte de lo vocal, también se crearon bandas no vocales, que usan la inspiración góspel para mostrar la intensidad en solos o partes instrumentales. Ejemplos de ellos son BadBadNotGood, Snarky Puppy, y la que nos convoca, Yussef Kamaal. Estos últimos aparecieron de Londres, en una escena conocida por tener bandas “apretadas” (musicalmente hablando), y sólo sacaron un disco, “Black Focus” (2016), el que fue hecho experimentando con teclados y baterías.

Mi manera de llegar a ellos fue escuchando justamente BBNG, y leyendo comentarios de un disco de ellos, alguien preguntó si había algo parecido a lo que sonaba y nombraron este disco. Yo, como siempre, con toda la fe lo busqué y lo escuché. Y, como se puede uno imaginar, me dejó completamente sorprendido.

Realmente, el disco es muy austero en instrumentación: Yussef Daves (Batero), Kamaal Williams (Tecladista), más bajo, samples en donde se habla del lado espiritual del jazz, y un solo de guitarra en una canción. Pero dan ganas de escucharlo una y otra vez. De hecho, lo hice así desde que me lo encontré, en el 2016. Y lo llevo a todas partes y encuentro que es uno de mis discos de cabecera. Fue un descubrimiento que aún me conmueve.

Ratgrave - Rock - a fun blend of Rockit-era Herbie Hancock, Squarepusher, and Nintendo (Black Focus)

Max Graef and Julius Conrad are Ratgrave. 'Rock' is their second LP ~ ongoing transmissions of Electronic P-Fusion from Earth. It follows a stellar debut on Funkineven's imprint Apron. The duo's sound pallette draws inspiration from 80's funk, soul, rock and electronic but through a contemporary lens from two versatile multi-instrumentalists. In their own words: "Rock is the essence of energy and vibration we felt in different styles of music, almost like a parallel component connecting all things we like. In the process of recording the new album we kept coming back to this essence no matter what style the original idea was. There was the raw and brutal energy of Jazz-Rock, a lot of video game influences that somehow adhered this essence just as well as quieter Pop and Psychedelic passages that we recorded. Among other things we absorbed a lot of heavy music during the time of the recording like Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Frank Zappa or Jimi Hendrix and realized while writing our own music how much impact they had even on quieter songs. This is why "Rock“ felt like the perfect title although the music ranges from P-Funk and Spiritual Jazz to various styles of Pop and beyond.“ Max Graef has previously collaborated with Glenn Astro on records for Ninja Tune and both artists have previously released on Tartelet. This marks the fourth official LP on Black Focus, a London label founded by Kamaal Williams

Henry Wu presents Yussef Kamaal (Live @ Worldwide Awards 2016)

This Yussef Kamaal concert was filmed when everything was still splendid between the two founders, Henry Wu aka Kamaal Williams and Yussef Dayes. The twenty-four hours that led up to Yussef Kamaal taking the stage at Koko in London’s Camden Town (on Thursday May 4th 2017) had been confusing though.

The duo’s announcement seemed clear enough: “Yussef Dayes and Kamaal Williams will no longer be performing together,” reading like a coroner’s verdict. But there were signs of life. Henry Wu would continue to perform the album with Mcknasty, Nick Walters, Tom Driessler and himself playing keys.

Yussef Dayes, it seems, is forming a new ensemble of his own with the goal also to perform Yussef Kamaal’s excellent ‘Black focus’ album.

This weekend Henry Wu is announced to be present at the Best Kept Secret Festival. When everything was still OK, this is what showcase festival SXSW wrote about Yussef Kamaal: On their 2016 debut Black Focus, Yussef Kamaal—the London duo comprising drummer Yussef Dayes and keyboards Kamaal Williams—manage to synthesize much of what makes jazz exciting in 2017, combining the cut-up rhythms of FlyLo, the fluidity of Thundercat, and the spaciness of Kamasi with a wash of Herbie Hancock synths and horn charts that could’ve been ripped from The Sea and Cake (of all places).
