Osprey and Black Jackal belong to ao3 writer superdanganisland from their Tiger & Bunny fic City of Dogs (linked I reblogs bc tumblr.) I HIGHLY recommend if long, story driven fic is your jam.
A/N: Fun fact! This was actually originally a Yoongi fic but I decided to make it for Atsumu. The original work is quite a bit shorter than this, so if you want to see the Yoongi version let me know! It’s not all that different from this

Maybe it was the way he stopped answering his phone every time you called or ignored your texts. Maybe it was the way he emotionlessly said hi to you when he came home from work. Maybe it was the way he repeatedly missed dates for work. Maybe it was the way his face lit up when the boys mentioned their new manager. Maybe it was the way he didn’t love you anymore.
You and Atsumu have been together since high school, and whereas you felt your feelings evolve as you grew older, it seems that Atsumu grew out of them. You always thought you were enough for him, but Atsumu was always changing, always wanting more out of life. It just never crossed your mind that that could mean you too.
The worst part of all of this? Is that you know Atsumu would never in his right mind cheat on you. But his heart really did have a mind of its own. So as much as you want to kick and scream at him for letting you love him all alone, you couldn’t. You couldn’t fault him for you not being enough. At least, that’s how you felt.
And while his heart moved on to someone new, yours stayed dependable, still loving and longing for him like you always did.
Sighing to yourself, you pick up your phone and ring Bokuto as he was where you’d be staying until you purchase your train ticket back to your home town. But Atsumu has been your home for so long; you’ve followed him everywhere, it feels so strange to stop calling him home. “Hello?” Bokuto answered.
You took a deep breath. “I’m ready, Bo.” It was actually Bokuto who brought it to your attention that your fiancé was acting differently. It all went downhill from there as you dug in. He feels a bit guilty, but you assure Bokuto that it was better this way and you were thankful. “Can you come in 30 minutes? I just want to say goodbye to Tsum.”
“Alright, most of your stuff is at my place right? You just have one more bag?” You hum in response looking at your last bag on the ground. It broke your heart a little that Atsumu never realized more than half of your belongings were missing from your shared apartment. “Good luck Y/N.” With that, Bokuto hangs up, leaving you in your empty and quiet apartment that was once filled with so much life.
You’ve considered staying and having Atsumu move out, but that felt selfish and you’re not like that. Plus, all the beautiful memories you shared would be tainted with the knowledge that he no longer feels that way. You would rather leave those memories as they were. You decided to take a small tour around the house, maybe you were being dramatic, but it felt needed as it is the last one you’d ever have.
Starting in the living room, where there were many photos of you and Atsumu happy together: on a beach, at home, at the park, anywhere that was with each other. Wherever you went, Atsumu was with you, and vice versa. You just never turned around to see if he was still following you like you always did for him. The memories brought tears of joy and pain in your eyes as you walked towards your shared bedroom.
There weren’t as many pictures, but this is where some of your favorite memories were. Many intimate nights, many talks about the future: when you’d get married or how many kids you’d have. How you’d grow old together. It was never ‘if’ with Atsumu, it was always ‘when’. Now they’re all broken promises. Every single one. Especially the one about loving one another forever. In this life and the next. But maybe in another life you two are happy together. You would like to believe that.
You opened Atsumu’s drawer and took out the box that he proposed to you with. Now that too was a haunting memory, but still beautiful nonetheless.
“Tsum, it’s cold outside!” You shivered on the empty streets of Seoul. The Jackal’s were having a game here and Atsumu insisted you come with them. You had just finished having dinner.
Atsumu pulled you onto the street and smiled a little. “We gotta live a little, yea?” You playfully poked him on the head.
“Tsum, a car could come-“
“The streets are super empty right now. And this is more important.” You look around and behind you to see if there are any cars, but Atsumu was right, there was nothing in sight.
When you turn back to him, he’s gone. Instead, he’s on one knee holding out a box to you with this huge grin on his face. “Y/N- don’t cry!” He scolds you but you can’t help it, and laugh a little. “This is supposed to be a happy time!” You nod your head and wipe your tears. “Now don’t interrupt me ok, because I’m shitting bricks right now and I don’t want to mess up, yea?” Another laugh escapes but you purse your lips together smiling wide. “There is… no one else in this world I want to go through life with me. There is no one else in this world that I am ever going to want more than you. I know I’m a lot, and I should thank my lucky stars that you’re so patient and deal with me the way you do. Loving you is the easiest thing I have ever had to do, and I continue to love you more every day. So,” He opens the box with the ring. “Do me one favor in exchange? Marry me?”
Before you could answer bright lights appeared behind Atsumu. “Tsumu! Move!” You pushed him out of the way and the car blares its horn at both of you now safely back on the side walk. Both of you start howling with laughter at your near death experience, and once you’re back to normal you give him a kiss on the cheek. “Yes.”
Seems like those were things that you’d miss.
You recalled hearing him talk over the phone with Osamu when he thought you were sleeping. He was so nervous to actually do it, but his twin urged him to saying, “I have never seen two people who have loved each other more.”
However, you also remember him on the phone with Osamu a few nights ago having another conversation..
You ran out of soap mid-shower so you stepped out to grab a bar of soap, but Atsumu didn’t hear you walk over to the closet.
“I don’t know Samu.” Atsumu told him. “I don’t think it’s the right time anymore.” He struggles to find the right words. “M-Maybe we should wait another year or somethin’? I don’t-“
The younger twin sighs, you can just imagine him shaking his head at him through the phone. “What is this really about Tsumu? Ya sound different. This… This isn’t like ya.”
“Can I come over tomorrow? Please?” The brothers bid their goodbyes and you walk back into the the shower. Pretending as if you never heard that heart-wrenching conversation in the first place.
This excuse the he made, “not the right time” was just a lie to cover up the fact that maybe it was the way he didn’t love you anymore.
The door chimed, and you looked at the clock only to realize you had 10 minutes to say what you want and leave. “Y/N. I’m here.” That was another thing. Maybe it was the way he never called this home anymore. Not that you could blame him. It really wasn’t now. You walked out of the room with your bag, but Atsumu doesn’t notice you as he takes his shoes off.
When he turns around he looks confused, but doesn’t question you. “Do you remember when we went on our fourth date, Tsum?” He’s taken aback, not saying anything, which is rare for him. He always has something to say. “Maybe it was the way you smiled, or looked at me, but I already knew I loved you.”
Atsumu just stared, bewildered by your sudden confession. “What are ya talking about Y/N?” He took a step closer to you suddenly a bit tense and frightened. “Is it yer birthday? I never forget, I-“
“Its not.” You shake your head making Atsumu relax. “I know.” You tell him. “I know you don’t love me anymore.” While you’re known this for a long time, it still stung watching him silently tell you it’s true. Atsumu thought he hid it well. He thought that she was just a silly crush he’d get over because he was with you. He loved you to pieces, with everything he had, he thought there was no way he could eve love someone like this. And in some ways, he’s right. But he feels as though he started loving her somewhere along the lines. It was her personality, her laugh, her humor, everything about her matched him which differed to you quite a lot. He likes to say that you’re just like Omi-Omi, you guys got along great and were so similar. “You don’t have to apologize,” that was all he wanted to do, “there’s no need. I’m just sorry I wasn’t enough to make you happy.” He wanted to say something, anything, but how could he when you spoke for him.
You walked up to him with all your belongings and kissed him on the cheek, the last one you’d ever give him, while muttering a goodbye. If you stayed any longer, you would have broken down, and the pain in your chest was already unbearable. It took so little time to fall in love with him, and now it would take everything to stop.
Bokuto greeted you with open arms as you left the building. Before you could get in the car you heard a bark, and that’s when you saw Miya Holly barking at you from your balcony. The rails were close together so she wouldn’t fall. “I’ll miss you Holly!” Holly barked back, hopefully she was telling you she’ll miss you too. The only Miya who would still love you unconditionally.
Upon entering the car you broke down into tears because you still loved him, but it still wasn’t enough. You weren’t enough. In another life, you tell yourself.
You take out your phone and begin to text Atsumu one last time before you blocked him on everything.
You: It wasn’t my birthday
You: It was our anniversary.
A/N: Welp sorry for that mess lol. Let me know if you want a pt. 2? or just any request really. Requests are open!
