If the mutant plot line is about racism, would it be fair to say that ending was unintentionally racist/used racist elements? I’m not saying Hori is racist or anything, but the story ending basically telling the mutants that they would get somewhere if only they work together “peacefully” with Shoji getting an award for that? It feels, to me, that it’s emphasizing being the “good” minority and then good things will happen.

Now focusing on how much bullshit this argument is, Martin Luther King Jr. the pinnacle of peaceful protest for civil rights, was assassinated for it! He had multiple direct attempts on his life, and numerous death threats! And a big part of both platforms was not being convenient for their oppressors. Being convenient makes it so the oppressors have no reason to change anything because they benefit from it

I do Eeny, meeny, miny, moe whenever I have an option between two things. I just did it the other day at Walmart. I was choosing between buttermilk ranch and steakhouse ranch. The universe chose steakhouse for me. I thanked it.

This Friday, my friends (Sherry ‘n Jerry) and I went to the Oakland Museum of California and saw the exhibit celebrating the Black Panthers’ 50th anniversary. The most distinctive part of the exhibit was the movement’s 10 point plane, painted in white on a black wall. The one thing that stood out to me especially was point 6: “We Want All Black Men To Be Exempt From Military Service.” Other than the fact that I had never heard of such a demand, I realized that this point was special in that it called for reparations instead of equality amongst races. In a sense, the most equal way to approach the matter of the military would be if all were drafted equally.

The priority of reparations over equality was something that struck me especially because I have been involved with the feminist movement for so many years now. Women have been suffering for nearly all of human history, in obvious and covert ways. However, feminists today are very careful to call for equality and nothing more. The definition of a feminist (someone who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes) has been all over popular media. Iconically, it was the backdrop of Beyonce’s VMA performance. All that aside, I wonder why it is so controversial for a woman to want more than equality in a sense, or to want to be compensated that all woman have endured in their lives. I feel that as a feminist, asking anything beyond pure equality is immediately disregarded. Yet, even today, in a seemingly equal society, a woman is beaten every 9 seconds. 

I am not sure if there is any constructive way reparations can be made for women, but I believe there is a lot to be learned by looking at the matter of reparations through the lens of African American history. African Americans were subject to a long, overt, and violent history that was pivotal in America’s development, history, and structure. It is much easier to point out to massive amounts of oppression that African Americans have been through than to articulate all that a woman goes through in her life. Violent things happen to women as well, but they are not in massive, state-sponsored movements in America; they often happen behind closed doors or in a subtle way. In a sense this increases the woman’s vulnerability to oppression, as the oppression is not as tangible, not as recognized, and leaves many still vulnerable.
