Damien was an accidental witness in the teasing. By the time he had arrived, the trickster trio were finishing up and hurrying off. He lingered to the side, unsure whether it was his place to intervene, but it gave him a moment to stop and look around.
A town of monsters that prided themselves on fear. What would they know to help those that weren’t the same? No. For once, this would be something that only the outsider human could deal with. It was what pushed him to cross the square and sit beside her. He opted to say nothing at first, waiting for a few moments before speaking his mind.
“If it was a crime, I would be one of the most notorious criminals in my home city,” he agreed. His cane was placed down beside him as he shifted himself into a more relaxed position. “I’m the outlier in my family too. They are known for using charm and manipulation tactics to get their way. I never agreed to that. I found it was much more worthwhile being honest and sincere. And the same goes for you. In my experience, the only ones who mock those with kindness in their hearts are those who lack it. And if I may be frank? Those are never people you want to get close to. If they think being nice is a liability, then that is all the proof you need that they will not amount to anything better.”
