Black Box Recorder | Trailer, Abinadi Meza
Abinadi Meza is the contemporary Renaissance man. Our class and I had the pleasure ofmeeting Abinadi Meza, one of the few winners of the prestigious Rome Prize ofthe American Academy. His work touches upon a variety of visual mediums, ranging from paintings to films. He finds passion for all things visual and sound. He plays with sensory perceptions and constructs political narratives. One such example is the Black Box Recorder, a narrative constructed of mixtapes of old found clips he had scavenged throughout his years. The narrator is the computer, and it produces an eerie yet compelling tone by contrasting the personal moving images with the monotone and lifeless emotionless digital. However, there is growth. Even within the short duration of the trailer, narrator sounds like she is “feeling,” responding with longer breaks between her sentences as if she is thinking. This strategy goes back to Abinadi’s intention to produce a “tension inherent in found footage.”
"It's between fiction and reality, coming from someone's life but lost in time.” "It's like you're an archaeologist putting together a story. These clips are like fireworks of our narrative imagination. "
