“Trayvon’s 23rd Personal New Year”, from the pages of “575: a collection of haiku by freedom clay”. Yesterday, I saw this vibrant, Black boy full of wonder and exploration in my neighborhood sitting down (as seen in the pics) and I asked him, “May I take your photograph?” He reluctantly consented and rightfully so, given this crazy world we live in today. Overall, the streets/neighborhoods just aren’t safe playgrounds for Black boys. Society and their caregivers have taught them to be on guard for a myriad of reasons. Upon further investigation of the photos, he instantly reminded me of Trayvon Martin with his hooded jacket on his head. Black boys should be allowed to protect their “crowns” without fear of being killed, targeted or shamed. This is why it’s so important to genuinely see and acknowledge Black boys when we encounter them because the light of their humanity matters. When I saw him, I saw myself. There is so much I can say about this beautiful, brilliant, black boy who is one of my biggest supporters and a fellow Leo! Imagine that?!?! We met for the first time in-person last Friday and he was one of the highlights of my evening (I had many). His social consciousness, compassion for humankind, passion for Black art, gregarious and engaging personality and the unapologetic PRIDE he has in being a Black boy is just straight up refreshingly inspirational! It's an honor and a privilege to know and be in community with him. I share with his beautiful Mom, fellow Aggie and friend @shonelthegreat often that she and his Father are doing an exceptional job raising a beautiful "hue-man-being".
