Her abstract collage is an expression of her experience of racial identity as a Black citizen of the United States. The repeated question of “what are you?” (in other words, “what is your racial background?”) from a young age sparked her interest in why people immediately categorize who and what they see. Through abstraction, she questions the way we, as humans, visually understand our surroundings by comparing what we see to what we already know.
