It was conceived as a continuous, curated broadcast, weaving news and social media clips, and cultural artifacts into a dynamic stream intended to reflect the richness of Black life. After success as an art installation, the project now takes the form of Kahlil’s debut feature BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions."

Via @variety: Melvin Van Peebles, the influential filmmaker behind “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadassss Song,” and father of director and actor Mario Van Peebles, has died. He was 89.

“Sweet Sweetback” was a groundbreaking film a few times over. Van Peebles financed and released the film independently, paving the way for an entire ecosystem of indie cinema. Because he couldn’t afford a traditional marketing campaign, he used the film’s soundtrack album to build awareness for the movie. And most crucially, he proved that films by Black filmmakers about Black life in America could be a profitable endeavor, presaging the explosion in Blaxploitation cinema of the 1970s.

“Dad knew that Black images matter,” Mario Van Peebles said in a statement from the Criterion Collection. “If a picture is worth a thousand words, what was a movie worth? We want to be the success we see, thus we need to see ourselves being free. True liberation did not mean imitating the colonizer’s mentality. It meant appreciating the power, beauty and interconnectivity of all people.”

Huge congratulations to the cast and crew of @sinnersmovie on winning three @bafta awards last night for: Original Screenplay - Ryan Coogler⁣; Supporting Actress - Wunmi Mosaku⁣ @wunmimosaku; and Original Score - Ludwig Göransson⁣ @ludwiggoransson.

Those well-deserved wins were also historical, as they made 'Sinners' "...the most decorated movie by a Black director," according to @deadline. And yet the honors - which should have been a moment of deep pride and celebration - were interrupted and almost overshadowed by an incident at the awards ceremony that has many of us angry & confused. During Sunday night’s BAFTA Film Awards, Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson MBE had an involuntary vocal tic while Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting. That tic was the N-word. @michaelbjordan and @theauthenticdelroylindo paused for a beat, then kept going. Because that is what Black people are so often asked to do.

I do not believe John Davidson intended to say that word. His humanity deserves protection. And yet harm happened. Intent and impact are not the same thing.

This is not a story about Tourette’s syndrome. It is a story about systems. The @bafta organization knew Davidson was attending. The @BBC had a two-hour tape delay and chose to cut “Free Palest!ne” from an acceptance speech while leaving in a racial slur. And when host @alancummingreally addressed the moment, he closed with “We apologize if you are offended tonight.” An apology should be an apology.

Delroy Lindo was born in London. Sunday was a homecoming. No one from BAFTA checked on him. No one came.

🎥#ArtIsAWeapon Thank you @thehotnessgrrrl for organizing our movie outing to see @bleeckerstfilms' #HardTruths, starring the indomitable @miss.lotusb (who deserves EVERY accolade for THAT performance), and gratitude for the wonderful women who gathered!

Caption reposted from @thehotnessgrrrl I already knew, so I prepared and had a GREAT day yesterday. I knew the shenanigans were going to be ridiculous, so I reached out to my homies and planned a Grrrls Day Out.

We saw #HardTruths and WHOA, if there's a movie that should NOT be watched alone but with someone or ideally, a crew of loved ones, it's this one. Marianne Jean-Baptiste gives us subtlety and raw realness often times within the same 60 seconds. She acts as if her whole life is riding on the authenticity of her character. There are hard truths that will make you nod cuz you already know, but BAYBEE, it's the soft lies that we, esp as Black women, hate to confront, that had us crying and left us in a fit of silence when the lights came up.

For me, it was kinda perfect to see this film yesterday w a group of Blk women bc not only did we all know someone like the main character Pansy, but we realized that we all had a lil Pansy in us and it's the disrespect and devaluing of our talents, beauty, and dreams that informs how we navigate the world. So we ate, drank🍸 and talked for 4 hours about the rage that comes with being both Black and a woman in America and how life-saving it is to fiercely choose joy. So many of us have loved ones who are mentally unwell. Loving on those who cannot reciprocate WHILE still preserving our sanity, dignity, and peace is the real hard work ...

If you haven't started yet, pls know, it's going to be on us to build community and surround ourselves with people we can laugh with, talk smack with, cry with, and be vulnerable. We need each other. We need to check in with one another and prioritize our well-being. I will be watching less news and making more time to read, indulge in the arts, and strengthen the bonds of my many networks.
